Does Moyes' reign look better with hindsight given the dismal performances of his successors?

David Moyes says that he looked at Luka Modric

David Moyes has revealed in The Times that he scouted Luka Modric for Everton before the Real Madrid midfielder joined Tottenham Hotspur from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2008.

Moyes, who is without a managerial job at the moment following his departure from West Ham United at the end of last season, was in charge of Everton from 2002 until 2013.

The former Manchester United and Sunderland manager has revealed that he scouted Modric when the Croatia international was still at Zagreb and before he moved to Tottenham in the summer of 2008 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £15.8 million.

Moyes wrote in The Times: “Everton were looking for a defender and I was there to scout a Dinamo Zagreb youngster called Vedran Corluka.

“Corluka was promising, but there was a little midfield player who quickly caught my eye instead. In looks he reminded me of Billy Bremner, with his blonde hair and small stature. In style he was different. He was very, very talented on the ball.

“After I came home, I kept talking about him — ‘I’ve seen this great little player in Croatia’. At the time Everton’s budget was limited and we weren’t looking for a player of his type, so I didn’t pursue him, but I kept tabs on his progress.

“Soon Manchester City signed Corluka, who later moved to Tottenham. And that brilliant little teammate of his that I’d seen — Luka Modric — joined him at White Hart Lane.

Success
Modric is one of the best midfielders in the world and has been on top of his game for a number of years now.
The Croatia international is a serial winner, having won La Liga and Copa del Rey once each and the Champions League four times.
A silky footballer who can sense a killer pass and is also great at set-pieces, the 32-year-old is going strong as ever.

Modric has also played a key role for his country Croatia at the ongoing 2018 World Cup in Russia, as they have reached the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition.

IIRC he also wanted Essien and Cech before they got their big moves.

I always thought what could have been had we signed Bellamy.

Apparently they met and Bellamy was... well Bellamy and a bit of a Bell, so Moyes called it off.

On the verge of our Champions League season that, I could be wrong but I think Moyes also wanted Scott Parker in that same summer. In the end it was only really Arteta who we signed that summer who had any real true impact on the team.

Moyes had an exceptional record in the market, especially with a miniscule budget, but the summer of 2005-06 was a big missed opportunity.

Probably the worst summer transfer window ever that one. We could have got Champions League quality, but we ended up with Simon Davies and Phil Neville!!

Van Der Meyde and Per Kroldrup too. A baldy Italian with a whistle is the most stark memory from that season but many mistakes were made from ourselves before that point ever arrived!

We can’t re-write history. Took us and this club from an abysmal period in our history to a position of restoring an identity and pride that had been sorely missing. He did a lot of great things at Everton but equally there was a real sense of frustration towards the end. I was made up he went in the end to be honest, he had become Everton in his own head. Would he let a player run his contract down like he did that year to see what offers may come in? No chance. FFS he was an employee of the club. It was a disgrace what played out - once he’d agreed terms with United he should have been told to go, not play out a thank you farewell and lap of appreciation. In the end he was more worried about losing than actually winning games; we were stale and flat. Looking back. His away record? His team selection away at Anfield that mid week game as we had Sunderland in the Cup on the Saturday? Shameful. Against that, he arrested a decline post Smith that had seen us heading rapidly to a place we were unlikely to return from.

We wonder why we weren’t winners under his tenure? He built the nucleus of a top side (on its day) but never showing the arrogance or desire of a side who know they are good. Too much of we had a go and competed is the best we should expect. Football has moved on; post Everton his CV is unlikely to see any future offers in the Premier League. When he left he saw himself bigger and better than the club. Without wishing to be critical to a former manager who played a big part in our recent history, we have moved on to a place where any regrets will be his, not ours. Wish him well.

Looking back we should all be grateful to Moyes, the 2 idiots that followed really have set us back, hopfully we look to be getting back on track now.
Moyes worked under the hardest conditions and did turn up some great buys with minimal budget. I was glad when he left as I hoped we could of got a good manger. Anyway id like to think he will always be welcomed back to Goodison

Man U job absolutely ruined him tbh.

Getting the dream job of most managers and absolutely tanking.

To be fair to him, doubt anyone could have done as well as we did as him with the limited resources. The thing is, the old Everton sentimentality cursed the thing by keeping him when it was obvious the glass ceiling had been hit.

Despite the nonsense with Baines after he left, I have no i'll will for the fella, god knows how the 11 years would have panned out without him.

Reputation was tarnished at united and some might argue he’s never fully recovered. He did a fantastic job for us on a meagre budget up until the last 18 months of his tenure. However I would have loved us to have had the money to spend that the two clowns Koeman/Walsh had in the summer of 2009. We had just finished 5th in the league and narrowly lost the cup final despite being without the spine of our team - Jagielka, Arteta and Yakubu. With these players at their peak I’m sure we could have had a really good chance of breaking the top 4 monopoly that existed at this time.

Ha Ha Ha.

He's already killed one United.

How does that dinosaur continue to be liked with managers jobs?
