My starting 11 wouldnt accommodate Cahill.

Moyes' will...even if it doesnt work.

Nuff said.

Well said.

I think generally against teams who sit back, he is a wasted position in our team. When trying to break a team down you need all the creativity you can get. I just remember games last season where we had teams park the bus and really struggled with Cahill in the side.

Fact is Moyes wont drop him, so I feel that Cahill needs to start up front. His workrate is put to good use there and he can hold it up too. Its a position where you can let your finishing do the talking. He should always have been a striker and its not too late for him to start now.

My solution with Cahill in the side?

Howard

Coleman
Jagielka
Distin
Baines

Barkley
Fellaini
Osman
Arteta

Cahill

Saha

Something like that really.

That's most likely going to be what Moyes goes with, apart from he'll have to have Neville in their somewhere. I have a few concerns. During the Philly game Coleman and Baines pulled wide for the ball, leaving big gaps between our fullbacks and centrebacks. I think that having two attacking fullbacks will leave us more exposed than normal. I also feel that we'll lose a big part of Coleman's attacking threat playing him at fullback because Moyes will be shouting at him from the touchline not to get too far forward.

It would also bother me that we'd have two such inexperienced players in Coleman and Barkley down the same flank.

If Arteta can't make things happen in central midfield, I have my doubts about Osman's ability to effect a game from there.

We're still stuck with having Cahill behind Saha, which means that Louis has to do all the donkey work and chasing by himself. Because Fellaini is the only defensively-minded midfielder, we'll either leave ourselves open to the counter or over-compensate and sit too deep.

Cahill
Saha Osman Anichebe
Arteta Fellaini

Dont mind the look of that to be fair....

Howard
Coleman Heitinga Distin Baines
Arteta Fellaini
Saha Osman Anichebe
Cahill

Certainly gives Arteta a chance to play from deep. Could alternate with Osman, Osman can provide creativity. Cahill can hussle defenders and get up and down...creating space for Anichebe and Saha - both have worked on the wings before. Blood Gueye, Barkley...and Rodwell can fit in Ossie boots...

Or even (as Saha is generally injured)

Howard
Coleman Heitinga Distin Baines
Osman Fellaini
Gueye Rodwell Arteta
Cahill

Depends on who we're playing against.

The fact YES and Are you joking? added together outnumbers NO says the majority disagree with those who've been passing round the glue like your good self.

That's not to say Cahill shouldn't be taken off if he's struggling (which in physical terms is rare as he's a scrapper and gives the centre backs a scrap unlike many centre forwards these days)....

But its saying he didn't get a nomination for the Ball'On Dor for nothing.

The poll is useless because loads of people have voted for the wrong option as it's worded weirdly.

That and I don't really care what most people think on this matter, because most people are blinded by their love for Cahill.

I voted NO because the thread title says something completely different to the POLL FFS

"Does Cahill hold us back" - NO!!!! FFS

Then realised the poll was saying something else entirely. :@

And in direct response to you my previous post said it all.

He's also equal to Dixie Dean in Merseyside Derby goals at the tin mine. That says much too.

I believe that we play better football and are a better team without Cahill in the starting lineup. He acts as a target man when playing and too much focus is on finding him and that acts as a hinderance to our team. Apart from his goals he doesn't offer much else and I feel that Osman or Bilyaletdinov are better players in his position to encourage good football.

A natural response would be.... look at the goals he scores. But the problem is that when he is scoring, no-one else is, which is because of the style we play when he plays. Yes he has been an iconic figure for the club, but I genuinely think he holds us back when playing. Perhaps we should put him up front again if we need to incorporate him in the team, but in midfield it is a position wasted as he doesn't have the technical ability to make us play to the ability we are capable of.

I think the main problem is cahill struggles in a midfield four in a 4,4,2.

Oh...sorry, was just trying to figure out what point you were making with this....
