2025/26 David Moyes

Apart from the fact that you are referring to 13 years ago or more, Martinez showed him how to properly use full backs in his first season.

….i think it was Chelsea away, we drew 3-3 but we’re winning late on. I apologise if i have some detail wrong.

We were winning comfortably and our RB was our furthest player forward. Suicidal, Fabrigas launched the ball forward early as he always did, Stones was having to cover vacant RB, Baines was forward on the left and we were so exposed with just Stones and Jagielka back. Chelsea scored.

It told me everything about how not to use full backs, talk about naive with both getting ahead of the ball. You watch, you learn.

Yes and no.

As there have been the same complaints all season. Had we qualified we'd be happy but we'd still have Keane Tarkowski defence. We'd still have the Beto Barry sub post 70 mins. We'd still be flogging KDH and Ndiaye to death. We'd still have negative football. List goes on.
There were LOTS of complaints tbf, i just think the silent majority were waiting for the end of the season to make a judgement.

Again, just referring to one match under Moyes, how about the Utd away game under Martinez when Oviedo scored from Lukaku’s cross. If that had been under Moyes that goal isn’t scored.

As a more general point, I want to win, and win in style more often than not. I appreciate both are not always possible but there has to be (for me at least a semblance of both).

….Martinez is not a blue print for how full backs should play, I’d be absolutely sure about that. I’d call it naive in its clearest form.

Moyes with Baines/Coleman was decent, one crossing the other getting on the end but others filling in behind but much depended on the match situation. It can’t be suicidal, what we did that day at Chelsea was stupid, I remember it so well.

Each to their own. Agree to disagree. The use of attacking full backs clearly depends on how you use your centre backs and midfield to cover.

He will probably get a few decent results here and there , things simmer down and revert to type again. Rinse and repeat. Said it when he rejoined he would move the club up the table, question is how far and to what extent.

He mentions Europe, ok and then what? What are you doing to do about ending the trophy drought? Isnt a league cup or fa cup achievable?

We have all this talk around projects and building, but for what exactly? It’s like trophies are a taboo subject.

When people ask what do fans want, I mean , it should be pretty simple shouldn’t it? To win!

…Martinez and his full backs might have looked great from a spectator point of view, but ludicrous if you you wanted to win football matches. If you want an example of how not to use FBs, just replay that last 30mins v Chelsea. ;)

….its an interesting point is that. He symbolises the Kenwright era, he’ll always have that against him.

Think that’s very valid.
I know you are supportive of him getting at least another year as coach but what are your metrics for success? What do you think are realistic targets? What would he have to fail to do/achieve that would change your mind? And over what timeframe?

We can never hope to moved forward as a club with Moyes around. He symbolises everything that's wrong with the club.
Especially when he’s got the local media in his pocket coming out to bat for him at any given opportunity. The majority of Echo reporters just hang on ‘Prenno’s’ every word because he used to be their boss. Got to give credit to Joe Thomas for trying to dig deeper with Moyes the other week but Moyes didn’t like it one bit.
