This ! And Landon Donovans loan had just ended. We’d suffered from Pienaar bein cup tied and Drenthe on disciplinary so started the game with Gueye and Osman on the wings, we had Stracqualursi and McFadden on the bench.

Of course. I found Joe Royle frustrating to be honest. Great fella and all that but his style of play wasn't to my taste. I remember the season we signed Gary Speed (God Bless) and the media had us down as dark horses for a title tilt and when I left Goodison after the opening day win over Newcastle I thought we had a team that could beat anyone. But that was the problem with Royles tenure we could beat anyone but conversely lose to anyone and some of our Cup humblings (York and Port Vale) left me realising that Royle would never produce anything consistent. Moyes whilst not winning anything at least had us consistently as the best of the rest which is a better manager in my eyes as you need consistency to build foundations for success (though Moyes let's himself down with his cautiousness in this regard)It depends on if your selection criteria is actual trophies or those of the seventh place variety i suppose.
Royle was also backed financially initially. He bought Ferguson, Andrei, Speed, Barmby in about an 18 month period. All top end expensive buys at the time and probably the equivalent of £50-70m players now. Gerrard, Short and Barrett weren’t cheap either. Moyes has never been allowed to bring in so many established proven high quality first team players in such a short period.Of course. I found Joe Royle frustrating to be honest. Royle 1 Moyes 0.You could also say it was Amokachi that gave us that cup opportunity..
Hindsight obviously..
Royle gave us a great feeling in a drab time.
Moyes gave us a great feeling in a drab time.
( Forget how much you despise the ending part of Moyes, the above is fact..
I've said for years the whole attitude of putting every defeat like that down to 'bottling it' is so annoying. We lost 2-1 to a late goal at a neutral venue, to a side that finished one place below us in the league. That's not bottling it, it's just losing. It's annoying but it happens, there doesn't have to be a deep and meaningful reason for it.I never buy that we bottled tbh at semi final in 2012. People say it was a terrible Liverpool team. It had Agger Gerrard Suarez down the spine and had Carrol and Kuyt on the bench. It was worse than some teams but in reality they had bottled the entire game up to the point Distin made that mistake.

People really need to start looking at the actual quality of our squad at times. We didn’t bottle 2012 and we didn’t bottle 2009, we just couldn’t hold on against two much better teams with much better bench options, especially in 2009.
I actually consider the FA cup under Martinez our biggest trophy chance. Lukaku had multiple chances plus a missed pen. The final was against Palace. That for me is a bigger opportunity. Even if we’d beat Liverpool in 2012 the final was against the new CL winners Chelsea who went on to batter Liverpool.
Stop talking sense man. Teams with massive budgets bottle it if they don’t win. Teams like us our inevitably going to be inconsistent and lose and win games unexpectedly in an almost random manner. That’s why our players our players are cheap and plays for us. Show me a consistently excellent players our players and you’ll be looking at someone way out of our budget.I've said for years the whole attitude of putting every defeat like that down to 'bottling it' is so annoying. No cup of 1995Joe, bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning!
Moyes had a few stinkers too mate Shrewsbury town for one , weren’t they bottom of the football league at the timeOf course. I found Joe Royle frustrating to be honest. AI'm not sure any of these would be valued that higly today. Maybe Andrei, but he's similar to Grealish.Royle was also backed financially initially. Yeah they got relegated to non league that season, absolutely shocker to lose to themMoyes had a few stinkers too mate Shrewsbury town for one , weren’t they bottom of the football league at the time
Shrewsbury, Reading, Wigan…all the hits.Moyes had a few stinkers too mate Shrewsbury town for one , weren’t they bottom of the football league at the time
No way. Signing Andrei was like signing peak Hazard at the time. Signing Barmby was signing a young England squad player. Speed was a top class player who had won the championship. We haven’t signed anywhere near that calibre of player apart from Grealish and he is nowhere near as good as Andrei Kanchelskis. Royle had a top 6 budget and we finished top 6. Moyes has a top 12 budget as he has for his entire time with us.AI'm not sure any of these would be valued that higly today. Maybe Andrei, but he's similar to Grealish.
Then Dibling and KDH.
He's been backed, prob to the same level as Royle. Theres no reason to think he wont be backed again in the Summer.
