2025/26 David Moyes

He could do a hybrid formation though, it’s essentially what he done when he first came in last year.

In possession we would play a back 3 with O’Brien dropping in as the third CB and Myko pushing up to provide the width.
Good point. Thats certainly an option, though maybe less appealing for me personally.

Straight forward 3421 just gets a lot of our players where you want them to be. Keeps Ndiaye and KDH more central in goal scoring positions, gives Patterson less defensive responsibility and gets Aznou on the pitch (in theory).

And as a back 3 has to be said that O'Brien, Tarkowski and Branthwaite give you everything you need. Aerial ability to step forward and challenge, recovery pace either side. Never been a massive fan of 3 at the back myself but just looking at what we've got atm it really seems to suit our players.

My gripe with hybrid system would be that it not only keeps Myko in the side but relies on him even more heavily to contribute in attack, and Ndiaye probably gets stuck out on the right by himself due to being the only player that could do a decent job there with no support.

I don't get this argument at all, nobody has the right to beat anyone in any competition it's a weird thing to say. What is a reasonable thing to say is that in the balance of probabilities we should be more likely to beat a team below us in the league, we should be more likely to beat a team that is new to the division, and being at home should be an advantage. It annoys me when people make out that all of the above is irrelevant and go into every game convincing themselves a loss would be an acceptable outcome. Do you suppose Man City fans convince themselves that there is no game in the calendar that they should be favourites for? Of course not. Our fan base is terrified of having ambition. Kenwright and Moyes did that to us. We didn't used to be like this.

I expect us to win tonight. If we don't I'll be disappointed.

Its not an argument, its what most fans do, hope.

Did we play like favourites, no we didn't. the first half the team made Leeds look like prime real madrid. The 2nd half we turned up and if wasn't for a confidence laden dibling might have won, but that first half was all too reminiscent of a tune we've all seen played before. This season its been Newcastle, Brentford, wolves and even spurs.

So myself and a lot of other fans don't go into matches expecting to turn anyone over anymore.

And hoping instead of expecting isnt akin to losing. Im not expecting a loss, I'm just hoping that we win.

My outlook is alot more grounded in current events and reality than one where an expected win is the only outcome.

I think one thing from my point of view, I have never been a football fan who demands a certain style of play. Obviously, if a team is constantly losing then things need changing, but in the end all I want is to see a winning team, if that is more pragmatic then so be it. So, the fact that we are not giving a 'passing masterclass' to most teams, if not all teams, is not a concern to me. I saw a better performance in the 2nd half, that shows a decent level of management, tactical and man management as well.

Styles of play dont really come into it. That just muddies the water. Yes you can play in different ways and achieve success. But ALL styles of play demand the basics of football are in place for that to happen. Passing accurately to your team mates consistently is the basic language of team play. If you dont have that then you wont be successful. Under Moyes that's hardly ever been the case. I've seen us go long and diagonal and play for second balls under Moyes, and I've seen us rely on very good players carrying the ball like Baines, Pienaar, Grealish, Ndiaye. What we hardly see however is a Moyes Everton team moving the ball about with pace and with players constanlty moving to take a pass. It's static football if there's not enough players who can carry the ball. That's why we always have players out wide stopping half way up the pitch and turning back.

I suspect that Everton's training drills dont emphasise passing and moving. But these players can do it. They're professionals who can be play any way asked of them. They just need a coach to allow them to do it instead of one who is terrified of leaving space open to the opposition.

You suspect?

So what are they doing on the training ground all day then based on your suspicions?

Ahem…

Irrelevant. We’ve been so so good in all the seasons he wasn’t manager since the 90s.
It's highly relevant. You can fire out as many middle fingers as you like, but Joe Royle has been our best manager since Howard Kendall mark one in the 80's.

Moyes spent eleven years here first time around and won nothing. It became apparent to me after he fielded a weakened team against Wolves in the league cup, that he won't be winning anything as manager in his second stint here either.😉
