But my expectations of what we'll do this season aren't based on where we were halfway through the season 2 years ago, obviously. Where we finished in those seasons is what's relevant when deciding what I'm happy with now, because it's actually happened. This isn't a hypothetical, it's a point based on actual facts. I'm not sure what point you're making? Are you saying that we'd have given our left arm to be 10th at this point of the season 2 years ago? I assumed you were saying just generally, like at the start of this season we'd have done it, but maybe you meant at some random points in the past we'd have been happy with this? Even then it's probably worth noting that 2 years ago without the deductions we'd have been 12th at this point so again I very much wouldn't have given my left arm to be 2 places higher with the possibility of actually going lower in the next few days. Maybe you hate your left arm?
I am talking about emotions, not about the emotions of where we may finish come May, more what we are feeling now. Are we more upbeat, are we more positive about the future of the club. It is not hypothetical to see what we were doing last season in January, or any other January before that, and then remembering what the feel around the club was, as a fan base.
Yes, we can look at points tallys etc. we can look at positions in tables. But much like the argument about 4th and 5th, which was better? It is about a feeling, it is about what you are seeing with your eyes. Some say the 5th under Martinez was better than the 4th under Moyes. It might be similar this season, saying it was a more comfortable 12th/13th than previous seasons where we have been in the same position after 38 games. Will they be happy, I can only speak for myself, no I probably wouldn't, but analysing the season as a whole it would probably be seen as a better season, given the circumstances surrounding it and the less worry of relegation throughout the season.
I am personally feeling a lot better about Everton this season than I have done for a long time. Maybe, 'giving my left arm' is a hyperbolic idiom, but it is still the case that I much prefer feeling this way in January, than I have done in previous January's.
Also, sorry, its a very low bar but seeing Sammy Lee and then the fat waiter in the dugout was far more soulcrushing than Bobby brown shoes
