Optimism and Everton doesn’t really work as we’ve had too many false dawns.
The best/most consistent Everton team I’ve seen is Everton between 07-09. But at the time the concern to optimism was Kenwright. Constantly selling our best players, not just for us, but for all clubs isn’t sustainable and the fact
Moyes kept us top 8 for another 3 seasons after that period is only testament to that.
Then we had the 12/13 seasons which was great but was never going to be sustainable, we still had Kenwright and Martinez was never ever going to be good enough to maintain anywhere near that, to the point he then oversaw our two biggest underperforming league seasons, not breaching 50 points with the likes of Stones, Barkley & Lukaku was criminal.
Then the Moshiri era, little bit of hope at the start, we kept Lukaku who went on to have his best premier league season under Koeman, we ended that season winning home games for fun, finished 7th miles above 8th, but then Lukaku wanted out and we signed a load of crap bar one or two (Pickford being the standout)
Then we had the Silva Era, started well, but we had a diabolical run after the Derby defeat, came back strong at the end of that season, but again we failed to build and Silva couldn’t get them going, he’s still the only manager of ours that I can remember to be given a game when the entire fanbase knew he was gone, the away Derby, because no new manager wanted that as a first game.
Then we get Ancelotti, he didn’t start overly well, but obviously an incredible thing to get him to manage the club, his first full season started perfectly, but again we dropped off, of course (just our luck) despite him stinking the gaff out Jan-May Real Madrid came calling.
After that there’s been no reason for any hope, even if you still had the ability to hope, with the following managers.
I suppose 2 differences now are, this is the first time we’ve had a significant spend in the summer without selling a star and we have one of the best stadiums in the league.
But it’s still Everton. The league position, given what we’ve become accustom to is good for the time of year, better than could’ve realistically been expected with no strikers or full backs, but our remaining fixtures could see this be another season of mid table nothingness.
Moyes has done great, again, 78 points from 48 games with this squad is really good. But optimism isn’t something I do.
