In commentary during one of the test matches they were speculating that in SL England might go with only 1 seamer plus Stokes. Leaving space for 3 spinners. Maybe those 3 plus Root is deemed enough.
Wonder who they will go with. England’s only half decent spinner in the last 30 years was Swann. (Maybe Panesar for about 2 years) Always a weakness in our team

They'll be desperately trying to persuade Moeen to return in time for SL.

Moeen (if available), Bess and Leach, Wood or Archer and Stokes would be my guess. Curran could also give a different option but must contribute as a batsman too.

maybe parkinson will get a chance

He should. Watching the debate the other night I'm sure alec Stewart has a weird hatred of him.... Saying only fingers spinners succeed in Sri Lanka.

Apart from the most potent spinner in the history of the game.

It should be Bess and Parkinson, with woakes, Curran and wood fighting for the other 2 spots

I agree with denly being punted but not for bairstow, that's mental

I think it's far more the natural pace he bowls the ball rather than a finger spinner per se. Murali did tend to fizz the ball through and perhaps they think it maybe a tough ask for such a young and inexperienced spinner if there could be better options available. English leg spinners, especially ones not overplayed in the championship, can mature and learn their art in their early twenties reaching their prime much later.

It's often easier for young finger spinners unless the leg spinner is truly exceptional. Murali developed in an environment where spin is king and a huge majority of the overs are bowled by spinners.

In Sri Lanka, the pitches, the flight variations and pace most suited and the hot, humid environment's effects were all like second nature to him. To use him as a yardstick to prove leg spinners for non subcontinental touring teams is the way to go is maybe not fair.

The far more experienced Adil Rashid did have some success at times although he also couldn't be used as a containing bowler conceding plenty always more effective against the tail. On the last tour both Moeen and perhaps the most effective, Jack Leach were more reliable for the most part.

I think England called in Bess (from outside the squad) over Parkinson in South Africa not anticipating they may actually have to play Matt, so may think him not yet ready. I suppose time in the nets may give them the advantage of a more informed view on his readiness.

England playing a one day warm up match against a South Africa Invitation 11. England won the toss and are batting, currently 107-4, recovering from 16-3, ducks for Root and Morgan.

Jason Roy the only one to make a welcome impression with another one day ton. New boy Tom Banton amongst the long list of failures with Chris Woakes chipping in with useful runs later in the order.

Let's hope these warmup practice games get rid of some of the cobwebs after the break since the New Zealand one dayers.
