Another usual collapse (7-64), all out for 268 and losing by 107 runs. Root's captaincy under pressure again, Bairstow has left the last chance saloon and Archer looking a one trick pony. Just a few of the myriad problems facing England.

Can tell you I wasn’t comfortable going to bed last night and even at lunch today England still were very much in it... shows totals of that size are hard to achieve 4th innings. Can’t say our performance won it .. apart from QDK no one stood up with a big score.. I expect England to come back in the series.. we really not there yet.

The heat in SA really took it's toll on the English players.

Just out of curiosity, every time when Rory Burns hits a boundary, does he go:

I had high hopes for us in Australia, but we've been really disappointing, the batting especially. We've actually bowled OK - irrespective of the fact that Australia have posted 400+ scores in both tests batting first - but batting, arguably our stronger suit, has been really poor.

Given the injuries to Ferguson in the first test and now Boult in the second, Wagner and Southee have put in herculean efforts, but batting-wise the likes of Latham, Williamson, Taylor, (yes I know he scored an 80-odd in Perth), Nicholls and Watling, have all under-performed badly.

All that said, Australia has some excellent, world-class quick bowlers. We just have not adapted at all to the quicker pitches in Australia compared to the slower tracks in New Zealand.

The quicker pitches especially relevant I think, and the injuries: NZ don't have the strength in depth to cope. Playing the 1st test at Perth in a day/night was a typical sneaky Aussie trick!

Lancs have signed BJ Watling as overseas player for the 1st half of next season, emphasising his batting qualities as the reason. It means they'll probably line up with three keepers: Vilas, Davies, and Watling. I wouldn't have minded Maxwell back, especially for his bowling, but after his problems I suspect he wants a break before the 'hundred' starts.

Bohannon and Jones have signed contract extensions - Bohannon especially promising though it will be tough for such a young player to hold down the number 3 spot in the 1st Division.

I thought they'd stopped this idiotic practice.

He's done his ankle ligaments and will miss the rest of the tour.

I said before the first test with the flu ravaged side in sick bay or just barely recovered that they should have pulled out and all come home.

Flu has left its damaging and weakening effect on eleven players and made the tour little more than a fixture fulfilling exercise.

Walking wicket Crawley will come in, hardly deserves a test cap as his first class average isn't even impressive and against far inferior bowling.

The rest of the tour is just good practice for the medics and their procedures for trying to contain a flu endemic within the squad, singularly unsuccessful so far.

Burns injury just adds to an already weakened emergency ward 10 team.
