Joe Root on Dominic Bess : "He's a fine player, a good character. He's a really good option for us an all-round package."
Out first ball, another stunner by Root ; not even in the original squad, what will Matt Parkinson be thinking ?

Parkinson may have been a better opener than Crawley, all too predictable failure.

Of course a failure on your debut means nothing at all about his prospects but if he's getting a slot with his first class average it's desperate.

The wooden Keaton Jennings has more quality and is at least a top specialist fielder.

It always looks like an accident waiting to happen those daft football games.
I remember watching Yorkshire warm up with a game a couple of seasons ago. Everyone was running around like madmen, especially Bresnan and Bairstow, but one player looked totally disinterested: Kane Williamson, who would probably have preferred a bit of batting in the nets.

As he's shown previously, Bess can bat a bit - a decent number 9. His bowling, though, is ordinary but I presume England think he might be a better defensive bowler than Parkinson, which for me is typically negative thinking: pick someone who might perhaps score 20 and go for around 3 an over, rather than a lad who might go for a few but could take 3 or 4 wickets, maybe more in the 2nd innings. Parky's batting has improved fractionally, as has his fielding, but he's really a number 11, which would make three with him, Broad, and Anderson!

Minor point in the context of things but it's time to drop Stuart Broad to down number 11 and put Jimmy up to 10. It's embarrassing seeing Broad jumping all around the crease before the ball's even been bowled. Today's horrible dismissal just shows were his batting is at right now.

Anderson at least shows some guts and hung around whilst Pope did all the scoring at the other end to get us some late runs which may prove vital.

Get Broad down to number 11 where he belongs. He's a rabbit. I'd even have him batting below Devon Malcolm and Phil Tufnell had those two been playing in this era.
