Good fight back from the kiwis said at the start of the series via another discussion forum that there batsmen need to fire don’t trust there bowling attack in Australian decks

I’ve barely seen a more average spinner than Bess, just hope he can do something in the fourth innings (if SA have to bat again!), but Root’s field placings are not helping him, as per. There’s just no pressure on the batsmen, Elgar & vd Dussen knocking it around with ease.

Bess did a decent containing job allowing the seamers to strike at intervals. The first time for a while we've had a spinner operate in such a miserly fashion in the first innings, that is outside Sri Lanka.

Looks a good selection for once.
South African batsmen at the moment are not overly confident against spinners.

Yes, he was a bit of a strange selection given he was only called up as cover for sickness (wasn't in the original squad) but he played such a key role today imo. It wasn't easy bowling from the end he did, where assistance was minimal, but he really kept a lid on their scoring very nicely and got the key scalp of Elgar who looked poised to reach a ton and more.

Not a glamorous job bowling over after over and basically trying to ensure nothing happens in those overs but 27 overs for 62 runs was a stellar effort which meant they never got away and others could profit.

A crucial job that someone had to perform and he really stepped up to the mark in only his third test.

A pity we have had to select the undeserving Crawley as opener as really 0-1 before we start and we could do without such a handicap.

So to sum Up. England fight back with the Ball and NZ start well with the bat after Labuschagne's continued struggles to adapt to test cricket*.

*Irony alert on that last bit.

Who do you think is more deserving of the opening birth?
