Alright mate - some of this is a bit nonsense. I worked over there and it was absolutely sound to discuss publicly Hu Jin Tao and his family stealing trillions of dollars from the state. And widespread misuse of IDs was really commonplace. The official figures are total garbage and it's a dirt hole of a country health wise but it's not quite as mad as you are suggesting (unless you're an Ughyir and then yes it is)

How long did you work there for?

the comments are all moderated as well, aren't they?

Nice to see a bit of umbrage and comments calling out articles and papers though.

The Guardian is the most heavily moderated BTL newspaper I know, it's the reason I won't subscribe even though it's probably the app I use the most. And it very carefully chooses the articles it will allow comment on.

This is what will need sorting first when all this is done, you have to be alive to fix human rights issues.

One thing this crisis has really thrown up is the 'value’ society puts on "types" of jobs.

Market forces blah, blah, that society places on people doing jobs now which are absolutely essential but pay, minimum wage per hour because that is what the "market’ says it must.

Health care workers and hospitial support staff, people who stack shelves, work behind a supermarket till, people who collect our waste, work in telecoms and utilities have proven how vital to society they really are.

Without them there would be literally riots in the streets, forget about hedge funds, sovereign fund managers, PR, advertising, i could go on and on , when the manure has hit the fan they are ultimately, meaningless jobs in a life threatening and real crisis's when we have been stripped to our bare bones.

Hope we all remember this when its hopefully all over.

100%. We are also really, really lucky that most of the jobs you mention were things that outsourcing and the gig economy hadn't got to yet - supermarket workers especially have really stepped up and they've been able to do that because they have the security of a job behind them.

Absolutely. I know healthcare staff have justifiably been getting praise but people in roles like you mention deserve recognition for going out every day and making sure the country keeps ticking over.

I was chatting to a Polish girl on the till at Aldi the other day. She said she was scared because she was seeing and talking to hundreds of people who could be infectious but she was there with a smile doing her job every day despite everything.

I think some of the homeless are having a rough time because of the lack of people in the streets and nobody carrying cash though. I've just been buying loads of extra cider cans and handing them out. Haven't been out for a few days though so hopefully they've managed to be housed by now.
