Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

After all this is said and done, in addition to the human cost of this there will be a quite substantial economic cost, I was talking to the wife about how governments are going to pay for all this? Obviously the first thing that they'll do is raise taxes, I thought what if they do an optional "tax" where they set up a fund and people can give whatever they want by direct debit or standing order, I'd be happy to give money each week so would my wife rather than be told this is how much we are going to take. I think certainly in the short to medium term they would raise more than through taxation as people will become patriotic after this. Does anyone here think that this would work and would you be happy to give rather than have it taken?

Wouldn’t work; hardly anyone would donate if it’s optional.

That's not the same as some posters trying to score polictical points etc as I stated there is a political thread for this subject put it in there ok if its a general comment, but polictical point scoring on this thread is not on imo - hence a thread has been put on by @COYBL25 for anything really politically critical -
Simply just use that - if its just a mild comment no problem, but if it gets to political use the thread that's there for anyone to vent their anger .... Staying alive is more important imo as it's a killer pandemic we are discussing on this thread .....

You tell them Joey.

I’ve got your back on this one.

Indeed. This virus is obviously dangerous to some, unpleasant for more, and insignificant (medically) for loads. But to my untrained eye, and this sounds horrible, so far it has seemed to hasten the deaths of a lot of already pretty poorly folk as opposed to being THE SOLE cause of death.

Hope that makes sense.

It does.

And I liked the random capitalisation, scared the bejeezus out of me.

Another terrible day for Italy, with another 889 deaths in 24 hours. Italy has now seen 10,023 deaths and over 92,000 cases. Some 70,000 are currently infected and 12,384 have recovered.

Scary stuff.

I can't help thinking - and this isn't to say the UK have done it right - that Italy, and Spain, have both gone badly wrong somewhere though.

It looked like their lockdown was working but the numbers seem to be massively up and down.

Hopefully this is the peak for them and over the next week we start to see an evened out decline. It has been three weeks now of lockdown.

Yes indeed it does.
Cummings would live with that. In his universe older people like me with health problems are unfortunate collateral damage. So what if I have another god knows how many years left? Tough.
