Partially, yes.

It could have been present here by then (the Oxford study referred to in that tweet @summerisle linked to and provided the FT article for said it had arrived by mid-January at the latest). Some people could have been sick with it and even could have died before the first cases were reported without it necessarily coming to notice (as there wasn't a test, people may not have been looking for it and it might have been confused for other things), and if their conclusion is correct and its spread far further but gives serious illness to less people then we would not have seen the hospitals get full straight away - but it would increase as the % of people infected goes up.

The only thing that would prove it one way or another is antibody testing, which really has to start as soon as possible.

The last paragraph I agree with fully. Not sure about the rest. but let's leave it there.

2020 is definitely a write off like - going to be on and off lockdown all year you imagine - the economy and job losses/business closures will be immense.

Just got to hope the virus has already ran its course through a good portion of the population and we start developing immunity.

When this is over, and I think it will be sooner than many think, I hope that people across the world reflect on the cause of this totally preventable mess and start treating animals with more respect. Isn't there also an argument that hormones in the commercial meat industry leading to reductions in the human immune systems?

In a world of vegetarianism I'm pretty sure these types of viral pandemics would not happen.

The likelihood is we are just at the beginning. And regards to "herd immunity" who can tell. For that term to have any meaning, widespread testing would have had to have started months ago. It didn't.

This is entirely within our control. Just seems to be a case of how quickly they are willing to let it happen.

As bad as it sounds I hope we dont follow China/Singapore and do longer lockdowns as simply put in a globalised world it doesnt work as like we are seeing with Singapore now people will just bring it back over here from other countries be it visiting or returning folk.

I would prefer we do short lockdowns of say 3 weeks - give hospitals that time to get as many treated and discharged before opening back up society and letting more of us come into contact for short periods before locking it down again.

Whilst the numbers infected would increase in the coming months you would imagine the figures would drop come say August/September time when the bulk of the population has had it and hopefully passed it before the harsh winter months.

I just dont think its feasible to lockdown for the 18+ months or so until experts believe a vaccine could be found by.

As sorry as I am to have to say it, I agree. We need to protect the vulnerable and avoid overwhelming the NHS but months of lockdown is unrealistic and probably counterproductive in the long-term.
