The history of SARS as well would have made both government and population more prepared.

Exactly - good point. It also is a population that has seen extreme government / military rule within a generation or two, so didn't need to do one last wilful show of defiance like our [Poor language removed] Friday and this weekend.

Those students in the US who went for Spring Break have essentially condemned thousands to their deaths in the next few weeks.

He's not completely stupid then.

Since 2 weeks ago in Ireland funerals are strictly immediate family only. Since last week no public religious services in churches, synagogues or mosques etc

I actually am unsure if any gathering is now held in form of a funeral Mass or Service, even for close family e.g. in a funeral home.

True, though how some of the elderly communities in Florida were behaving anyway was massively risky as well

These measures are all about taking as many people out of circulation as possible to stop the NHS being over whelmed.
It's a drip fed approach, they are banking on by taking out the non essential workers, people who can work from home, elderly, people with underlying medical conditions and others then the infection rate and NHS burden will be manageable.
Eventually there will be measures to allow parts of the aforementioned cohorts to be allowed back out to allow them to contract the disease and all the while maintaining the NHS's ability to cope.

Takeaway shops shut too then?

Would think so. Especially if McDonalds, KFC etc are shutting - not exactly essential

Havnt got a clue what I'm supposed to do for money here, im a self employed groundworker, don't even know how to claim this sick pay as I've never done it before

There is discussions going on regarding self employed which are difficult apparently. Instead of having to go through wage history etc to means test and give individual figures, why not just give all self employed people a flat rate. At least enough to help pay bills food etc.

Yeh I'm still worried about that too (not in your industry) and my cousins both work on the gas. They still need to work and they get paid rates. God knows.

Hoping there's another update soon in terms of self-employed/freelance. There's been a big push for it over the weekend.

Re. sick pay I think the line now is to use UC. But it's crap. I called today and couldn't get through. It's easy to make a claim online (https://www.universal-credit.service.gov.uk/) but after that you need to call to arrange an interview.

It's five weeks from date of claim to getting paid. Different levels depending on your age/if you have family.

I'd get a claim in regardless as it can't hurt even if the new funding is announced in the coming days.

Why are people calling this a lockdown ? It’s far from it. The option of allowing people to make the decision of leaving home to themselves is just prolonging the risk of spreading the virus.

People need to leave home to get stuff. They need to leave home to care for others (my nan is beside herself in confusion atm and it's bad enough the only person that can go and see her is my mum). And people need to get out and exercise (even the simplicity of walking a dog - not everyone has the luxury of a big enough garden for a dog to roam around in).

It's bad enough that this has to happen in the first place.

I'm in Spain, as of yesterday we have to fill in and carry a document saying where we live and the reason we're out the house, we can leave only to go to the supermarket or pharmacy which you can only one person per family, all the supermarkets require you to wear gloves and most hand gel as well now.

Doesn't look like we are doing that BUT then again this lockdown wasn't needed until people went for a day at the beach everywhere here......
I'm meaning about going for a drive in the daytime - in my own private car to get a bit of a change of scenary from the mind numbing boredom of living at home on my own

What harm is that doing?

None at all

But I'd argue fundamentally that is still going against the government advice. Like literally they have said go the shop, go to work if you have to and if neither then stay at home

A little bit like being told not to walk on the floor your mum has just mopped so you climb on all the furniture / worktops to go about your business lol
