Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

i think it’s unfair to lump that in with the halfwits treating this like a bank holiday . Of course the tube cramming is awful and will undoubtedly lead to infection but I still feel there is a degree of mitigation
It was more of a comment about people going out on mass generally, not specifically about using the tube etc. I would think at that time of the morning, they would be going to work. That's the goverments fault for not covering everyone to stay at home sooner. Surely this decision is imminent.

....as most will know, my daughter is a Consultant Surgeon. Worryingly for us, her specialty means she’s been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. She suspected she would.

Regardless, she’s just sent us and her brother a really severe message from hospital - ‘stay in the fckn house’. They fear the [Poor language removed] will truly hit the fan and when it does the young will take priority. Best if I don’t go into detail, but its likely to get very bad and lots could die.

i know we all realise how serious this is but it‘s genuinely likely to get critical. Don’t visit the family, don’t mind the grandkids, don’t allow folk in your house, thoroughly clean your door handles and stay inside if you possibly can.
Honestly mate, I think it's best you DO go into detail. There's plenty (including some, though mercifully few, in this very thread) who still don't get it.

Shouldn't this be in

Yep, they always seem to just have a handle on everything. Seems to be the mediterranean countries getting it the worst, I wonder why?

I remember reading something about the genetics of Mediterranean people having more lung receptors than most, giving the virus more footholds. Not sure if that's true or not.

Without wanting to get into the whole generational divide thing, erm, not many generations have had to go through a pandemic?

This is new to everyone.

I'm 25. Have seen the UK go to war twice, have seen plenty of terrorist attacks, have seen a global economic crash (well, now it's going to be two). It's harder than ever to get on the property ladder etc.

I'm not saying I've had it tough. But this is just an entirely new experience for everyone.

Thanks fellas. My wife generally has quite mild symptoms (thus far), and I don't have anything yet, so physically all is pretty good. Just had a break from the forum for my mental wellbeing as much as anything, as obviously suggesting sodomy with a parrot is not something one should wish on anyone. I hope everyone is doing well, and thanks again for checking in.

Be careful with @Joey66 I think he’s in musth, as he keeps offering to bum @orly

my guess is because they have to go to Work and half the tubes have been shut down . I’m happy to criticise some people treating this like a holiday but some of them are probably nhs staff or key workers

And Khan has shut those tubes down and the gov haven't yet issued a full lockdown and even if they did - like you say - plenty of people would still have to physically go to work.

A double edged sword theory of yours, not saying it will cure anything really bad, but maybe with a combination of other medication for chest infections not Coronavirus by the way .......but it will do no harm and maybe help some symptoms - sometimes a placebo can help any patient mentally mind wise .......
If people feel benefit please don't condemn it.......also who's to say it does not speed up the cure of a chest infection?
It's a very old remedy been used for generations.....before many modern antibiotics the GP don't work on viruses either but they write them out at will - some don't they use more practical instructions........i.e. Take more liquid rest up, take parcetomol etc .....

I'm in no way condemning it and by all means anything that relieves symptoms or has a beneficial effect without causing harm is a good thing. As you say placebos can be excellent.

What I am saying is that something that alleviates symptoms is not the same as a cure. Or that because someone did x and then got better that x was responsible for them getting better.

Painkillers for example might stop something hurting but they won't rectify the issue that causes the pain. And similarly, putting your head over some steamy menthol may help with congestion but it's not what is curing the ailment that caused the congestion.

And on the antibiotic point I'd argue that the days of GP's writing them out at will have been disappearing for quite some time, certainly less so now then when I was a kid, and they remain a vital part of treatment for many illnesses. Any health professional worth their salt knows they aren't a cure all and if the basics of looking after yourself such as rest, liquids, over the counter treatments and giving your body time to fight it naturally are sufficient then it is a much more preferable way of getting better.
