Family friend unfortunately one of those - in for a knee operation and caught covid in hospital :(

Nik didnt get counted as a covid stat, but she didnt pass from what she was admitted for. Or rather, the initial diagnosis led to other stuff. Happens when folk are medically vulnerable, and jotting down "Covid" is very easy once a patient becomes a corpse. IMO.

From the BBC live feed:

"Although China was the first country to record cases of Covid-19 two years ago, it has only just today reach the milestone of 100,000 total cases.

According to today's official statistics, there have now been exactly 100,000 confirmed cases of the virus in the country. China has a population of 1.4bn."

That seems crazy!
No way the have had only 100k cases

Seems crazy is right, I wager everything that I own that in reality they have had millions of cases. They are like the Soviet Union in the 80s, to quote the TV show Chernobyl "lies are practically what defines them"

Cases matter because they lead to higher hospitalizations and deaths. In South Africa that relationship has changed and with it we are going to have to change our understanding of how much we care about cases. It is probably to early to stop testing and isolating but at a point in the near future we are going to have to grapple with it because everyone is catching this strand.

So Omnicon is going to be a bigger threat to the 90% vaccinated in the UK than the 25% vaccinated in South Africa?

How can this be?

No idea. It’s getting me down all this crap.

Would imagine the average age in South Africa has something to do with it, something like 16 years younger than ours we know already younger people fair better with this virus so basically we have more frail immune systems in our communities here in the UK than South Africa.

I get what your saying but it doesn’t really make sense because we’re talking about Covid for which we have boosted our immune system against this particular virus 3 X more than they have.

Yeah, we'll probably know just after Christmas. perfect time for the govt really
If we see a similar surge to South Africa, then we're set to peak around end of December with cases.

So 'peak deaths' would probably be first week of Jan. I think Jan 8th was the worst day for cases last year, and Jan 21st was worst for deaths (or around that)
