So tons more positive cases (30k) and fewer deaths than a week ago.

Obviously, it's still horrendous numbers, but if this is the start of Omicron hitting (which it almost certainly is) then hopefully we don't see the deaths shoot up. I know that obviously there's a lag so that the people dying are likely to have died from Delta strain anyway
Doesn't make a difference on infectiousness and spreading but...I'm concerned that if huge numbers have it mildly, that hospitalisations and deaths are going to look really really bad, despite it being a positive test on admission and not admission for the virus. We really need that broken down clearly so proper data is used, or we'll never open up again

Why should the deaths and hospital admissions look bad if the vaccine is effective and 90% of the country are vaccinated?

It shouldn’t effect these stats by much.

Thats the kicker.

Like, as it is, in England, there are 15 patients in hospital WITH omnicron, not necessarily because of it.

I think he’s saying that for as prevalent as this is probably going to be, pretty much every person admitted to the hospital, for whatever reason, is going to be admitted WITH COVID. When it comes to deciding if the country needs to endure another lockdown, we need to know how many people are admitted BECAUSE of COVID.

We'd prob lose if we were playing against 11 bits of COViD and nothing else tbh

Imagine how useless a single bit of COViD would be in goal too

That is a completely false division though - for a start, people being admitted with something else can still get sick with / die from (or with complications from) COVID.

Secondly if someone has COVID they’ve still got to be treated as infectious in hospital irrespective of what they are actually sick with; they still add to the extra burden on hospital staff / resources caused by them being positive.

Most importantly of all though is the daft mess that is hospitalisations justifying lockdowns - to do that is to be a week late, making the lockdown longer and causing more damage than it needs to be.

Because the hospital and death numbers are anyone with a positive test in hospital and any death within 28 days. If millions of people get it, and even a small % of them go into hospital with other conditions and may not even have symptoms but test positive, that'll count as a covid admission or death if that happens. Even if its not related. The stats are far too rigid for this new situation

Was a conspiracy before and rightly so, but this time if its absolutely everywhere but mild in most people it could distort things and make things seem worse than they are, if that data isn't split out

And vaccinated people are getting it, if that's what you're getting at. Actually that's the reason this could be an issue
