The new variant does have symptoms of a cold. It shares its genetic make-up with the common-cold causing coronavirus. It's probably why it's so much more infectious.
Then theoretically.....it will act more like the cold then rather than the flu.

Which would suggest that it's both moving closer to the cold than ever before rather than mutating into the plague.

Just sounding off , we will find out either way.

Well yeah that's what the early evidence shows but because it's so infectious it's going to hit a lot of people in a short amount of time. Hence the booster jabs (70% protection from any symptoms) and the new mask measures etc

Tbh Toff that info is from a non peer reviewed preprint and there weren’t that many genes that were the same - seen a few folks who usually know their stuff be a bit skeptical on the conclusion so would be a tad wary as stating it as definite until get more data.

okay mate, fair enough, though it's definitely looking likely... There' 3/4 that we know of that cause the common cold. It wouldn't be at all unlikely for this one to be much more transmissible because of that.

If the evidence was there that it wasn't mild, I'd be much more sceptical. But people have seemed to scoff at the SA data a bit which has been annoying. And now the official studies here have said a 29% drop in the severity from Delta.

However, what we don't know is if that's definitely because it's a milder strain OR if it's because this strain is hitting populations that have some immunity (whether through vaccines or natural infection or both).

I've seen it suggested, and obviously we don't know for sure yet either way, that Omicron could be just as severe as Delta if it hit a population that had no immunity (i.e. as it the original COVID wave did in March last year)
