Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I do agree mate, but the use of the media to terrify certain sections of the public is disgusting.

For instance over the past few days, it’s been reported as gospel that 200 000 people a day have been catching the Death Star variant.

Yet when the “ daily figures “ are reported on the likes of the BBC, they’re in the 50 000 ‘s.

So, which is right ????

It’s stuff like this, that’s sending the worried well scurrying back into their bunkers and ruining businesses.

I think this is probably fair. Between Javid and Raab having no grasp of the numbers whatsoever, it’s leading to uncertainty.

In terms of which is right. Get the numbers from the ONS / Gov.Uk, over trusting this incompetent shower to correctly articulate information. Which has been my take since day 1.

Again I agree, but most people don’t look at the ONS, they watch the news channels and this gross misrepresentation of numbers, is what’s doing the damage.

This is what’s scaring people into cancelling their plans and hiding away again, as they think the Three Horsemen are riding again.

We’ll see this Friday I suppose, I’m out again and expecting it to be absolutely rammed. Went out to do some Christmas shopping and for lunch yesterday and it was very busy.
I think it’ll be busy but to be fair mate that isn’t really the point , pubs have a limited amount of space and staff . They’ll make money on that day because its mad Friday and the weekend but its about a consistent stream of cash . A lot of boozers can’t stand mad Friday because of how the night evolves , the week and the income stream is where its at and the money is down .

Don’t get me wrong people are out but restaurants are definitely hit , look at tables this week you’ll struggle peak Saturday night but you’ll get one next couple of days and that’s mad .

Gonna go and book a table tonight my local curry place, and leaving a decent sized tip.
I do think it is important to support your local businesses. I wasn't planning to. But the owners, staff etc have families to feed and mortgages to pay. It's not right people are being scared in to not going out and do basic things.
I believe people should grow a pair and go live their life.
You never know when your last day is coming.
Go enjoy, spend time with your friends and family. Turn the news off and go make memories.

I just don't agree with all this idea that it will kill thousands like it's a guaranteed thing. Or the concept that this variant despite being reported as milder will do something delta wouldn't do?

The two don't go hand in hand. Infection doesn't mean death, it may have done for a long time without antibodies but it doesn't mean it now. With 120 million vaccinations in 90% of the population , why is that suddenly irrelevant? Those predicted deaths could also have 3/4 jabs in them, does that not count for something?

That's where I am coming from. It's the assumption that it will kill thousands despite the vaccine. It's the whole idea that people with 2 jabs are suddenly seen as no better off as an anti vaxxer which isn't true. So a milder version of a virus in a population vaccinated up to the nines, it may not stop people getting it which was never the case anyway, but those antibodies have to factor in. All this information is ignoring that fact , which you know deep down I'm right about.
Not sure I've seen any scientific evidence to suggest that it is a guarantee. The consensus among scientific advisors is that we don't have enough evidence to make definitive statements.

I don’t know anyone that supports them including my sister who is an overwhelmed front line NHS worker.
I think as others have said it's about what you class as restrictions.

I don't, personally, class having to wear a mask in a supermarket as a restriction. But shutting places down or all but shutting them down in name is obviously a restriction.

We’ve had to cancel our office Christmas do but will be having a takeaway from the same place to try to compensate.

My place's work do (it's a big company) was down in London a few weeks back so nobody from our office was going. We'd planned a curry night for tonight so we're still going, but they've made it clear to everybody there's no pressure to attend (the team is only like 12 people), and anyone who is going just has to do a lateral flow beforehand.

Not fair, like you say, for a place to lose out on bookings. It's not officially a work do, so we're just being sensible about it.

yeah will be interesting to see

went to one of my locals yesterday and it was absolutely dead. This should be the busiest time of year. 2019 I remember going a similar time before Xmas, on a Monday or Tuesday, and it was heaving.

Before the first round of restrictions, I went in for one on a Wednesday afternoon and it was packed. So God knows.

Mad Friday is horrendous.

Same way as the initial Imperial modelling estimated 500,000 deaths without any measures to combat transmission, was jumped on by the Telegraph and it's readers as 'scare mongering'.
