But this is a false comparison. Because the comparison should be against the number of deaths *without* any restrictions whatsoever. Which would have been alot higher without the measures (including vaccines).

People are ignoring that bit when they are looking at opportunity cost and whether restrictions are worth it.

Without those lockdowns the NHS would have been destroyed completely. Which would have had an even bigger impact on primary care and onwards than lockdown.

The comparison isn’t the outcome of restrictions. It’s the outcome of no restrictions whatsoever.

Which would have been horrifying.
I guess we'll never know.. I never said remove all restrictions, by all means mask up keep a distance between people and sanitise hands it's locking down the country I have issue with, I'm talking the proper lockdown when they decided that you can't go more than 5Km from home and most stores closed.. obesity is one of the biggest co morbities with covid, yet close the gym but leave McDonald's open. Masks fine sanitisation fine social distancing fine... crippling the economy no thanks.

Pre vaccinations yes, we had to protect the NHS as there was no defence, we now have that to protect the vulnerable.
I don’t disagree.

But the point made was about the impact of lockdowns on other care and I’m making the point that you can’t ignore the alternative reality. We wouldn’t have had an NHS to protect. Lockdowns and restrictions were necessary at that point.

We need an expansion of the health service. Unfortunately it does like covid will reduce life expectancy in the UK in the long run so we need to upgrade the system to cover the additional people.

The decision to massively reduce the number of hospital beds from 2000-2020 is starting to look very very stupid.

100%, but that’s something else they’ve not done
About the same numbers you are willing to accept from lockdown and restrictions... between suicide, missed early diagnosis of cancers and a load of other reasons.. Oxfam has said that Covid restrictions will cause more deaths from starvation around the world than the virus will kill, due to the cost of food rising and charities not being able to collect the required amounts of money.. but hey who cares that will only be in the poorest countries at least the richer countries might be able to drag another few months of life out of 98 year old Nan.

I don’t know if you lot have noticed this, but it’s hospitalisations being so high that prevents cancers being picked up / treated. It’s staff being reassigned that has helped to cripple mental health provision.

It’s this government repeatedly attempting what you want that is causing all this damage as well as the extra deaths, the financial pain and the rest.

How much longer are you lot going to complain about problems your policies are causing and then suggest the answer is more of the same?

How much longer will you be happy to have restrictions, 2 years? 5 years?10 years? forever more? Let's forget about the economy then when the money gets tighter and tighter I'm sure the doctors and nurses will be more than happy ho take pay cuts and maybe even volunteer their time.. and they'll be thrilled when the covid tax kicks in to pay for all this ya know the things you think should be done.

Booster jab done, was supposed to have had it right this second but I’d got to the vax site early cos of an early bus and got put straight through. Was out by 11, amazing service by the NHS workers there
Ditto. I’ve had mine today, turned up early and waited no more than two minutes and now waiting for the fifteen minutes before driving home.

Great work by the NHS. Supported by a lot of volunteers too. Annoys me a little that the volunteers get nothing and these consultants are making millions off test and trace but o well.

Got my booster next week and I'm early 30s so they are definitely getting through the age groups.

To suggest it's a lack of staff driving mental health problems is frankly ridiculous, people had to jump through hoops to get treatment for cancers etc which has caused lots of deaths, all due to restrictions not a lack of staff. Hospitals on the whole have coped throughout the pandemic, even the early stages. Those mega nightingale's never even getting used and are now disbanded, would they have done that if hospitals were at breaking point?

Is this actually true though?

From my experience I’ve seen diagnosis, treatment (including operating and chemo) and recovery from March 2020 onwards.

I’ve also seen diagnosis of kidney failure and full dialysis treatment through the entire time too.

Is it isolated to certain districts?

For as long as we need to - as long as this virus is causing what it is, we need to make sensible decisions or we will keep having the problems you claim to be so concerned about.
