Out in the Algarve at the moment and the general behaviour of people here is completely different to the UK.

Despite the sunshine, carefree outdoor eating and drinking, set foot indoors and you are left in no doubt that there is still a pandemic.

Masks, hand sanitisation and one way circulation systems with social distancing still in place.

People just seem to adopt the requirements as common sense, without the childish outrage at a perceived loss of freedoms seen back home.

Been to Spain, Malta and Greece this summer and all 3 have masks for indoors but I'd say the compliance is a bit mixed but mostly pretty high. The greeks seemed less bothered but it was an island so maybe they have low numbers there or something.

Getting rid of masks in England has changed peoples mindsets completely.

Its tough because even if they brought it back a lot of people still wouldn't wear one.

France was the same; in fact coming back here was even more depressing than it usually is.

It’s really interesting eco mapping this out, from the individual, to family, to community, to society. It’s really been illuminating how societies have culturally reacted.

I think we’re into a fascinating stage of the pandemic psychologically. Were there is a sense of safety and a sense of risk, the two things mutually existing and we as individuals, communites, social groups , governments and society’s oscillating between the two - very similar to Strobe and Schutte, model on Duel process theory of grief.

The result of this oscillation of opposing forces is the creation of uncertainty. Humans dont do well with uncertainty, secuirty is one of our base needs. Thus, anxiety, tension, frustration, apathy, ambivalence and anger are visible in ourselves and the general population. Everyone thinks they are dealing with this in their own unique way, when really whether you are compliant, hesitant or just getting on with day to day life, they are all just standard and predictable human coping strategies to threat and adversity.

Don’t know if people have done much review of psychology around this phase of the pandemic, but Amy Cuddy has done some great work on what she terms Covid Flux.

this podcast is better, just skip all the great flu dead stuff - well worth a listen:

I guess it's a little easier to have balance when outdoors is available to you as a guarantee. We'd destroy a lot of hospitality if (when - a matter of time) we go back to social distancing indoors as we just wipe out their customer base over winter. I reckon if we had guaranteed good weather then we'd have never removed the indoor restrictions, but as it is we have given that industry a lifeline over the past few months. I'm convinced we will go back to all the restrictions soon..

No idea if it's possible but I guess hospitality needs to re-model itself for winters with reduced capacity but they'll need financial help I'd imagine

In a lot of cases people's livelihoods are linked to these restrictions so it's got to be taken into account over focusing on covid above all else

I've just read back and I think this is a debate on vaccines more than distancing, but I'm of the opinion distancing is the only thing that can stop this, and that it's here forever however many vaccines are done due to home socialising and work proximity regardless of vaccination status. I just think the result of it being here forever is permanent changes that people don't seem able to face up to yet. For me any restrictions this winter means restrictions every winter unless nhs capacity is increased, but given who our government is that isn't an option so we need to work in the realms of reality. And eliminating covid isn't part of that reality

More widespread use of HEPA filters in hospitality sector would likely also help, not just for Covid but also other airborne diseases

No need for HEPA filters if you ventilate spaces with sufficient fresh air.

As always with what appear to be simple solutions, each brings a trade off with increased energy costs.

In the case of installing HEPA filters to an existing ventilation system, it may improve filtration but would probably also result in reduced total air flow.

You can only install HEPA filters to a system designed to have them installed from the outset. Those flogging them don’t tend to mention that.

@RAFUH another study on mix and match vaccination

The findings of this study suggest that the use of heterologous ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and mRNA prime-boost vaccination is an effective alternative to increase population immunity against Covid-19, including against the Delta variant which dominated the confirmed cases during the study period. These findings could have important implications for vaccination strategies and logistics, and consequently in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Certainly worth looking in to..

By the way, that cat is huge!

I'm not going to argue his points as I haven't read a lot in the area, but he lost me a bit when he's comparing an IM injection to placing central lines and pericardiocentesis.

Bigger issue is needle length and injection technique for me. I've seen vaccine clinics and it's all the same needle. You need a different needle for a thin elderly patient than you do some 30 year old hoss.

Aye but I'm off to a gig next week for the first time in 18 months and couldn't be happier. Can't wait to get back to a match etc.

Are they doing indoor events such as concerts in Portugal?
