We've had a lot of commentators, say this is bigger than 9-11, bigger than the fall of the Soviet Union etc.. The only thing that this is comparable to is WWII.
Maybe it is. Funny thing about the end of WWII, vast discrepancies between the have and have nots started to be addressed.
Addressing or making meaningful headway about the huge discrepancies that exist in our society today, it hasn't really amounted to much.
It took a massive social upheaval to do that previously. Lack of a basic healthcare system was addressed. Similarly, education, not as a privilege but as a right. Assumptions were overthrown.
Strange thing is, when folks stake their life or feel their life is in jeopardy, things can change real fast.
Some people move more towards a more meritocratic, equal society. Even in totalitarian states. Imminent death for your loved one's, or yourself, simply makes you not give a hoot anymore. What do you have to lose?
Of course, in two months time max, this will all be over. And we can all get back to watching the footy again.
