The debt will likely be taken on over 40+ years. It'll be a mind boggling number and will need raised taxes to pay it off, but over that sort of timescale, inflation will, in real terms, slowly chip away at it as well.

Take a % off the assets held in UK and UK backed tax havens; it won’t be enough to pay it all off but there’s ample justification for doing it (given the support that is being provided to many of the businesses they own or invest in, and what economic collapse would have done to those assets). There’s somewhere north of $9 trillion held in havens worldwide after all.

....daughter is a Consultant, if she’s not in work she’s on call. Just been chatting; because of her area of expertise she feels she’ll be on duty in Intensive Care from Monday.

I’m asking her to make sure she has a face mask, she says they’re not ideal unless they pass a ‘fit test’. She’s worried about us, we’re worried about her.

Eggs your daughter is a hero and an inspiration to all of us.

Don't need to be a condescending arsehole. Read various reports a standard face mask doesn't prevent but helps if you have it.

You need to give your head a wobble. Imagine if, in the 'real' world, you were standing at a bar with friends and one started saying he was worried about his daughter who is now working all hours, exposing herself to significant risk, to save the general public in the midst of a global pandemic - what would you say? Because in my world if you took the tone and approach you did just there you'd get a smack and told to clear off and drink on your own.

Just like North Korea!

...really? I’ll tell her to let all of her Consultant surgeon and NHS colleagues know that their specialist masks ’don’t help’ stop people getting the virus.

Need to tell all those Doctors in the ICT units in Italy as well. Thanks for that.

All of those are probably wearing them in case they are already infected to prevent passing to others.

Senior medical officers here have made it clear that the mask does not prevent one acquiring this infernal virus.

The consistency of the virus is such that one can acquire it through the eyes!!

So you didn’t tell people how to save money, but you explained all the things people waste money on that they don’t need.

o_O

If people are complaining about being skint but spending money on Netflix/BT Sport etc. each month then yes that should be pointed out. I'd hope others would do the same to me.

I'd appreciate it if my friend corrected me, whether rightly or wrongly, on a topic. That's how we learn and grow. All he had to do was clarify the type of mask he was referring to. My friends wouldn't "smack and told to clear off and drink on your own" since they're, you know, friends.

...no, the masks do help prevent catching the virus. I think they shield from spray droplet’s, which is why NHS staff need to undertake a ‘fit test’ to ensure they fit securely.

As I said earlier, though, they do not provide a 100% barrier. You are right, I understand the virus can be contracted through the eyes (not something I’ve confirmed with my daughter, just my understanding).

If it's wrong, it's hardly a correction.

Sanitizer will kill germs already on your hands. Does it also stop you picking up germs as you walk around the shop handling stuff? Genuine question
I was told the other day by a doctor that you're highly unlikely to catch the virus from touching a surface because although the virus can survive a while on surfaces it quickly loses its virulence outside a living host

I really hope the death toll starts to slow down in Italy but if it doesn't any time soon (say in the next week)... then isn't that really, really worrying for the assumption that locking down will stop this?

There's loads of factors which need to be considered obviously.

Still think having people locked in their homes to the extent which Italy are is actually counter-productive. They're not even allowing people out for walks or bike rides in some areas now. It's not healthy at all.

There's also the fact that I suppose as a general rule of thumb more elderly people live with the rest of their families in Italy than here. So I suppose that could be having an impact too – especially if they're all locked in together.

Yep it's an airborne disease.

Obviously any measure you can take to protect yourself and others should be taken but this thing is passed on by breathing.

Which is why locking people in confined spaces is in my mind counter-productive.

(I know this hasn't happened here yet btw and I agree with the measures we've taken so far).

Why did you cave in or did the SS come in and change your thread name? It was the Chinese virus all along. You seen it before us all and had the gumption to say it. It’s China virus (super bug). Chi-na!

I didn’t change it Mr Death. The mods did.

When I first heard about the deadly virus it seemed that it originated from China. There are now rumours that it was in circulation long before the Chinese outbreak.

First time I've heard that. How on earth do they learn these things?

So the chances are, presumably when we get infected it's airborne

Charlie Austin apparently has symptoms after attending the Cheltenham Festival, No sympathy from me m8 nor for anyone else who attended.

I attended the festival.
One week on and I seem to be ok.

It’s impossible to pin point exactly when anyone contracts this virus (it’s totally invisible).

Charlie Austin my believe that but I think he’s just talking wham.

I dont believe it for a second.
