Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

LBC people ringing in went out for meals last night, plus bars in Edinburgh as they had booked their stay ... so commonsense does not prevail.....

You're right mate and it's irresponsible. But maybe folks are taking a last hurrah. It's not responsible but it's understandable. Once the chilling statistics come in, coupled with government clampdowns. Attitudes will change.

Dog muck happens, we'll adapt and this will pass.

In Germany apparently. I wouldn't know myself because I've been hunkered down already for a week. But the German government is on the news pleading with people to stop big gatherings, saying they'll be observing people's behaviour this weekend and if their pleas are being ignored that they can't rule out a ban on going out for non-essential reasons. Young people especially according to the news are throwing "corona parties" in houses and parks. There are reports of police monitoring the streets already and dispersing large groups, closing down bars that are illegally staying open etc.

Oh fair enough.

Yeh tbh I think now the pubs/bars/cafes etc here are all shut there is genuinely no reason for people to be in large groups anywhere.

People are still rambling/walking etc but they're out and about and in a lot of open space. I think they'll be fine.

I am a bit worried about the schools situation though. I know full well there's going to be large groups of kids now in the parks and stuff. All these people demanding the closure of schools didn't seem to think about that tbh.

It's gonna be a really weird time.

Spain death toll - record one-day rise
The number of people who have died in Spain has gone up to 1,326 in total - a rise of 324 in one day, according to the health ministry. Yesterday's rise was 235.

Lockdown continues to prove... well... inconclusive as to actually tackling this it seems.

Not really. The deaths come from existing numbers already infected pre-lockdown who take days/weeks to die, rather than a reflection of the current situation.

It takes quite a while for a lockdown to reflect in the figures, because in the short term more families will get infected as they go into lockdown too.

But it's not wrong?
I really don't think it matters whether your post is right or wrong. The simple fact is Nymz, whether you accept it or not, your post was lacking in both empathy and tact.

Eggs is understandably concerned about his daughter going into the front line next week and wants her to take any precautions she can. You telling him that those precautions won't work anyway is definitely not what he wanted or needed to be hearing.

This virus is affecting everybody, some more than others, and we are all individuals who will react differently to any given scenario. I think all of us need to be more understanding and accepting of other people's feelings, even if we may disagree with them.

Countries with low rates of infection. The first thing I ask myself is. Are they testing, do they even have the means to test?

“The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health received a notice yesterday that all of Nevada’s requests to the federal government [for test kits] are on an indefinite backlog without any estimate of a timeline for delivery,” he said at a news conference Friday.

Now that's the federal government. If that is the case nobody has a clear idea of what is going on at ground level, if people can't be tested. Does that apply to the UK or other European countries. I don't know.

It appears figures are being drip fed to us simply because the extent of the problem can't be determined if we have a shortage of testing kits.

Went into the grocery store tonight, the cashier was beside himself, in bits. I was just going to pay and get home to be honest. But my girl asked what was wrong. I'm trying to get out of the door but he turns round and says "every single glove they give me keeps splitting"

Casually I said they should be paying you double, it was off-handed. Honestly at that moment, I was just tired wanted to get home. It was flippant. But I've been thinking about it all night.

I've mentioned this before, if you're not invested in the system. Minimum wages. Why would you take the risk?

"Essential workers" I agree ensure that individuals who continue to supply the public are compensated with the risk involved.
Those guys working at the checkouts are definitely in the high risk section of catching it. Down here in Cornwall, a lot of these are 60+

I believe it is the right strategy, but it is too early to tell.

Sadly deaths are probably the more reliable indicator in the early stages, as testing has so many variables. Infections, whether detected or not, should slow after 7-14 days, but the figures for deaths won't show any slowing for I don't know how long after. Of course, if/when hospitals are overwhelmed this figure will be skewed again.

Double their pay. I mean that. Workers should be payed according to the risk involved. This isn't a time for the 1% to sit back and garner profits.

Which they will.

Walmart want to hire 150,000 extra employees. Awesome. Are you going to pay them minimum wage? Good luck.

We just got an immediate 10% pay rise today for a few weeks.
Backdated a few days as well.

It's not just that - it's also those that will be asymptomatic or barely have symptoms - mild sore throat at most. There will be thousands of them.

Pretty much any country right now can multiply their "infected" numbers by 10 or 20 and you'd be closer to the real number. It's why the mortality rate is so high too, because only those serious enough to go hospital are really being counted properly in the figures - so you're seeing 3-5% mortality rates when the reality is that this almost certainly will be at most 1% and probably someway below that.

We won't know for sure until we get the antibody tests and pretty much the whole population is tested.
