How do they work out 80% of self-employed with varying monthly incomes?

Couldn't they look at last years tax returns

Touch wood, but my clients have largely held up thus far, but I know many freelancers whose income vanished pretty much over night, and they'd get practically no help from this measure at all. If mine were to go the same way, I'd get nothing, whereas the wife could lose her job and get 80% of her salary. The distinction is jarring.

Well the coronvirus is carried in a shell of what is essentially fat, and soap breaks down fat. So, actually, yes, washing our hands with soap can save people.

It wasn't advice - and I apologise for my blasé tone - just fed up with all the faux sanctimonious outrage from all and sundry

No more unfair than giving employees 80% of their wages guaranteed while giving freelancers £350 a month to live off (that's assuming that Universal Credit works under what you presume would be a heavily reduced HO workforce, which I highly doubt given the problems they had under a full workforce)

Just been talking to lad I work with who even said 'the self employed are being s*** on for some daft reason' he's cards in and I'm self employed, both work for a civils firm and on the same money, he's sorted if we go into lockdown, self employed will be put in the do I eat or pay a bill this week category

I can bet that all these claims for money going in isnt going to run smoothly, and by the time i get my first UC payment or statuary sick pay ill probably be back at work, 9 stone lighter or on the street by that time, it's a toss up

All this hasn't been thought through and will no doubt change, hope thinks work out ok

Got a form in work today that I am to carry with me in the event of lockdown that identifies me as being an 'essential worker'

This is all escalating very quickly, but seeing an an official document with my name on it really sent the chills down my spine.
Not quite panicking yet, but this is all starting to feel very strange. Like runaway train type of strange
