Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Don’t think there’s a right answer to that question.

UBI trials I’ve read about have tested at ~€1000 per month ( back when the euro was worth less), but for some that wouldn’t be enough to cover the mortgage, while for others it would be a substantial increase to income / safety net.

I’m still a fan of UBI in principle, and half-hoped that was gonna be the announcement today, but while not perfect, think they’ve made a strong backing of workers today.

Except the 5 million self employed workers, who have been told to go [Poor language removed] themselves.

that kinda defeats the key principle of UBI, and makes it simply a means-tested benefit, which is what we already have (however insufficient).

It defeats the point but it's also just generally a better idea. The country will need every penny it's got so it shouldn't be going in my back pocket in that example should it.

Incidentally, as Universal Credit is means tested, I'll get bugger all at any rate, so it really is just left to fend for myself.

Speaking from experience, wading through UC as a self employed entity is an absolute nightmare. And usually futile.

Except the 5 million self employed workers, who have been told to go [Poor language removed] themselves.

Hence the “while not perfect”, caveat and specific reference to workers (Meaning employees). While I’m praising the support of workers, doesn’t mean I’m accepting the lack of support for the self-employed.

So you think people still on full pay should get as much as those without right now?

This could be a long discussion about the efficacy of UBI. In principle the answer is yes, however given the announcememts just made, the answer would be no. It’s a controversial aspect of UBI that all citizens get it, even those who don’t need it.
