All getting a bit grubby on the profit front now...I don’t suppose EU threats of stealing development and production facilities helped either.....

“Pfizer has admitted it may ditch the German biotech firm that made its breakthrough coronavirus jab as it looks to drastically expand its vaccine business.
The US drugs giant has revealed plans to use gene-based technology, harnessed by BioNTech, to tackle other viruses and illnesses beyond Covid.
Pfizer's boss claimed the firm had learned enough about mRNA vaccines to go solo, adding that it no longer 'needs to work with BioNTech' beyond the end of the companies' flu jab agreement in July”

Good news, im not sure hes talking about the Covid tie up here. More the MRNA technology, it has huge potential across of spectrum of vaccine use. Its quite brilliant.

I thought about posting over the weekend about future application of MRNA, it really could be revolutionary in health care.

Rubbish

The pubs opened on the 4th July - Infection rates stayed steady until mid September, two weeks after schools reopened

I wonder what happened there?
Lol.

There is absolutely no doubt that the restaurant industry was a key to a massive increase in infections last summer. The eat out to help out scheme is the poster boy of all the stupidest things you could do during a pandemic.

I accept that the 12 week period between jabs was to some extent a gamble by our government, but I believe that it was an educated one and that it had scientific support. It certainly made sense to me and, for once, had the overwhelming support of this countries population, with just the odd dissenter (same as on here really)

With each new piece of research/evidence coming through we're finding more and more that it was the correct decision to make and, fortunately to some extent, the gamble paid off.

What I don't understand is, now that the evidence is there, why aren't other countries following suit? If I was German or French or Italian, I'd be screaming for my government to do what the British had done and get a single dose into as many people as quickly as possible. But I don't think any of them are even considering it. Why?

In all honesty, i think other countries are waiting in the long grass on the Uk strategy. With the Uk racing ahead with the one dose strategy, i think a lot of countries are looking at how the big population level experiment or educated risk goes as we hit the second dose debt period.

Karina Butler - head of our immunisation programme over here has suggested its something we could look at for the younger population over here, rather then take the chance with the older and more vulnerable and likely wait to see how things pan out in the UK over the next period before deciding.

You'd have to say anecdotally the numbers look good.

Strong evidence here that the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine prevents infectiousness- this is what we want!

That's likely what most of us in Ireland will get huge quantities about to be shipped soon.

Interesting comments by Chris Whitty. Personally I think by saying that its unsafe to interact with people who have had two doses you're giving anti vaxxers fuel.

Lets face it if a grand parent has had two doses and then waits a few weeks they should be able to hug their grandchildren.

Can see why the boosters will be targeted at only certain demographics when you see figures like this.

I’m going to say it as well- young people deserve a financial reward for this last year. £500 voucher should do it. Spend it at all those restaurants selling overpriced muck and pubs selling swill.

I just don't think they're going to allow night clubs to open, full capacity football stadiums etc. Deaths are down, which is obviously great but the NHS needs a huge buffer to get through the massive backlog of people waiting for other treatment. If we completely open up as normal, given how quickly the virus spreads, will still see some hospitalisations . We don't have all the data, but hopefully these will be manageable, but I think July will be too soon. I would to be love to be proven wrong.
But we're still just under three months off that.

23 deaths recorded today (over the last 28 days). And that's with loads of people in the younger groups still to vaccinate.

Think of it this way - we're exactly 12 weeks from January 4th, the date we went into lockdown. And in exactly 12 weeks, it'll be June 21st.
