Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Have you ever heard of vaccines? That's how we prevent deaths but it's never going to be 100% prevention.

We could prevent all road deaths by having a 20mph speed limit on every single road.
We could prevent all airplane deaths by banning flying.
We could prevent all gun deaths by banning all guns (more appropriate for America)

......but we don't do that because life is a risk that ultimately ends in death.

Suggesting that social distancing and the mandatory wearing of masks carried on indefinitely is just ridiculous and unworkable. People are sick of it already and businesses are being ruined by the restrictions so it has to come to an end as soon as possible. Luckily Boris agrees and we're aiming for normality by 21st June.

we've had 120000 deaths, and been locked down for two lots of several months each

South Korea have had 1500, and haven't locked down

Prevention is much better, cheaper, less damaging, more effective and kills less people than the cure does. Please, if you understand one thing from this pandemic, understand that.

Seems a bit mad that gyms can open before cinemas

Not at all. How much social contact do you have at the gym, other than the occasional 'you nearly finished?'? Also most gyms have enforced strict hygiene rules, sanitise in/out, temperature check at door, wipe before using machine and wipe afterwards. Windows opened too, I'm a bit shocked they're not opening them earlier tbh.

In any case this is a big day, honestly, the strain of the past two months has been horrendous mentally. The fact we have an end in sight is incredible and gives us something to look forward to - roll on the coming months - all being well.

They'll gather in volume but I think there'll be reasonable doubt in most minds - still too early - but by mid April/early May if numbers are as low as I expect them to be then it'll be increasingly impossible to prevent people just completely disregarding advice.

If they're smart, they bring the total re-opening forward to around 15 May and say they're doing so on the proviso that people still take precautions like masks. Because by doing that people would do that. If they waited til mid-June, as soon as that deadline hit everyone would take the proverbial urine and completely stop any voluntary safety measures.

There's a risk of people taking the p***, granted, but let's face it, people are still doing so now to an extent, just it's having a very limited impact, because there's nowt open and the odd person going round to stay their girlfriends isn't actually doing much damage.

I think if people see that the first easings start to work, then hopefully - and this is where government messaging has to be strong (which I'm not exactly confident on) – they'll realise that the plan is working and see that the reward is there. Carrot and stick kind of thing.

Also, if they're sensible, then they should keep up the policy of testing as being your entrance to events etc. I really do think that's a workable solution.

Anyway, just been on a run and was buzzing. The result on Saturday helped, the fact that I've been able to get out on the bike last week and the fact that it's 11 degrees and I didn't even have to wear a jacket, but just done my fastest 5k in ages and genuinely feel so much happier than I have done in ages.

I know there's a long way to go and I don't exactly trust the jokers not to get something wrong, but for now, if you're not at least a little bit happier that we've got an idea of what can happen moving forward, then honestly, just lighten up. Go for a walk, enjoy the decent weather.

They KNOW what they are on about. They have done for decades. Its just because the rest of the country have become interested in what they do, we dont understand how utterly routine this is for them now.

To the vax folk, its the same as us putting petrol not diesal in the car.
I've never read anything at any time from scientists in this field that they believe the threat from mutations isn't a very real and great danger.

Exactly the same hygiene rules have applied at the cinema - Plus the fact that you purchase a ticket online (so don't have any face to face contact) , pick your seat (so the cinema can only allocated seats a certain apart from each other)

Plus you don't have sweat flinging around everywhere - Well, not in certain cinemas anyway

Does 5-a-side footie outside fall into Step 2 then? Itching to get back playing.

Were you allowed to play 5-a-side in December?

If you were, I guess it does. If not, then I guess you'll have to wait until Step 3?

Edit: I think it will be Step 3 (no earlier than May 17th), if it's an indoor centre. If it's outdoor maybe the second part of Step 1 (which is March 29th)

I don't really eat out that much. But I'm glad millions of people who run or work in restaraunts will be able to have their livelihoods back.
Their livelihhods are secondary to their health and the health of those who go to restaurants and sit indoors for hours. They are one of the main sites for becoming infected.

Perhaps, I don't know much about the cinemas tbf i didn't go in the past 12 months. I recall the BBC article showing the % of people track and trace has sources as being at a gym and it was significantly lower than pubs/restaurants, supermarkets and schools.
