So: a big 'back to the old normal' policy backed up with vaccines; then back to the lockdowns when the vaccines will need to be adapted but wont save tens of more thousdands dying in the winter.

We have vaccines every single year as it is. Or as it was.

They have got to grips, vax wise, with Covid. They can tweek it the exact same way they do with flu every year.

I personally think the 5 week minimum between changes is clearly down to making sure there is time in the bank when/if new variants are found that could pose a risk.

Sorry, but that’s just wrong.

If there are thousands / tens of thousands of easily preventable deaths, then we as a society should look to prevent them.
Have you ever heard of vaccines? That's how we prevent deaths but it's never going to be 100% prevention.

We could prevent all road deaths by having a 20mph speed limit on every single road.
We could prevent all airplane deaths by banning flying.
We could prevent all gun deaths by banning all guns (more appropriate for America)

......but we don't do that because life is a risk that ultimately ends in death.

Suggesting that social distancing and the mandatory wearing of masks carried on indefinitely is just ridiculous and unworkable. People are sick of it already and businesses are being ruined by the restrictions so it has to come to an end as soon as possible. Luckily Boris agrees and we're aiming for normality by 21st June.

Not at all. First, the vaccine adaptation is rapid - so when we pick up new strains they'll be developed, tested and in use before it can affect the population to any serious degree. This already happens yearly with flu, and the COVID vaccines are showing to be even more effective than flu vaccines in terms of stopping serious disease (immunogenicity).

There's been no sign whatsoever of the virus completely evading the immune response the vaccine provides. To lock down forever in fear of one 'possibly' occurring at some point in time would be complete lunacy. It'd be the equivalent of never mixing together with humans just in case smallpox comes back in a different form - just doesn't make sense.

I enjoy all the things most people do...I just dont want it when if it puts others in the position where they could be in mortal danger.

Maybe I'm just able to be disciplined and I'm not the consumer driven 'kin robot that Thatcher's Kinder are?
This will not be understood by anyone under the age of 45...

There is no possible argument against delaying opening up anything until every adult in the countrey has at least one jab...preferably two. That way - if you also have tight border restrictions - you deny space for the virus to mutate.

...no possible argument against that, that is, if health is uppermost in decision making. However, it clearly isn't, is it?

Vulnerable people have livelihoods as well.

They’ll be as happy as the rest of us that there’s a way out of this.
Absolutely. I for one cannot wait to see my mum, dad, brother and friends as well as return to work. I am fed up now of having decisions made for me. If it is deemed safe then I am happy to go for it. Since last March my wife and kids have spent about 8 of the last 12 months stuck in the house.

No signs yet. It is a major gamble.
