It had no impact on the rates at the time though, and you know that
Of course it did. The eat out to help out scheme has been lambasted for laying the basis for the second wave.

At the time, I stressed.

Whether it contributed to further rates is a good point (further down the line).

I still stand by the main cock up the government made in that late summer time last year was the mental decision to allow Unis to return, and subsequently having thousands of students travelling around the country just as autumn began in earnest.

Indeed. There's a misunderstanding as to how exponential growth works.

An R rate of 1.3, for example, doesn't initially show a great increase. 10 people infect 13, 11 infect another 16 etc. etc.

It's only a few weeks down the line where 1,000 are infecting 1,300, who then infect, 1,600, who then infect 2,100 and suddenly it's doubling every few days in massive numbers and the population is overwhelmed.

There's no doubt that scheme laid the basis for the second wave being as severe as it was. That said, the second wave of some kind would, of course, have happened regardless - it just would have happened later. The whole point of all suppression measures was to give us time; when we had suppressed it, Sunak took the piss and took measures exactly the opposite. Grossly irresponsible.

Only if you define competent as not as bad as the UK. We were in a position to see the UKs coque-ups and even our politicians could see it was not the way to go.
You cry conspiracy, but its usually just plain incompetence...ours are slightly less so, not too much but enough.

He’s wearing the kings new clothes again.

Ireland, Wales and Scotland are in vogue this month.

What do you mean?

They were open and there to be transmission points - ALL the time they were left open.

Many people were arguing they were doing no good, not just myself. There's no excuse for pleading ignorance about these places and the effect they were having.

Spot on.

That time should have been to get a 'world class' track and trace system in place, not to stuff cash in the pockets of restaurant owners and thereby seeding a second wave of infections.

Sunak was using that scheme to ingratiate himself with the Tory base for a future leadership challenge.

How that monster sleeps at night I dont know.

At the time, the rates stayed flat. They did not immediately shoot up as you say they did. There were plenty of safety measures in place.

I don't think Eat Out to Help Out was a great idea. But I don't think it was a huge contributor to the second wave either - I think it was part of it, but the main issue came when schools went back (which I understood) and unis went back (which was needless) and the weather started turning.

Difference this year to last is that we have the vaccine, and by August this year, every vulnerable group will be fully vaccinated.

I agree there.

I don't think the key contributor to seeding a second wave was EOtHO, that's all.

It was part of it, but a smaller part, imo. The main contributors were schools (I get it, though), unis (no need) and, well, the fact it was always gonna happen come Autumn.

Btw, I don't think I even partook in EOtHO - I might've got a takeaway coffee and sandwhich.

I know we usually look in the vaults for dunking but checking back on this day in 2020 and noticed this

Sadly it appears it will be like influenza with the new variants popping up.
Hopefully someone is researching if a flu/COVID combination vaccine is possible as it looks like we’ll continue to need COVID “top ups”

We already have combination tests...

The vaccine cant be a get out of jail card to be used this summer. The vaccines will put a floor underneath many vulnerable people for an undertermined period. It cant be used in order to open up the economy as in 2020.
