The vaccine cant be a get out of jail card to be used this summer. The vaccines will put a floor underneath many vulnerable people for an undertermined period. It cant be used in order to open up the economy as in 2020.

We disagree there, there's no justification for it.

If you don't get back to some form of normality when the vulnerable groups are vaccinated, then you may as well never do

This has to be taken very cautioulsy and carefully (loosening restrictions). It cant and wont be like last year. The scale of failure would be off the charts and risk throwing away hard win gains.

By 'some form of normality', I'm talking about being able to go and do things come the summer. Going to the gym, going for a swim, going to the pub, for a coffee, etc, in June - that should just be fine.

Then, if that carries on well in line with the vaccines continuing at pace, we look at where we're at in late summer for crowds at outdoor events, in a limited capacity, only allowed to go with a negative test, have to wear a mask for entry, etc etc.

I wholeheartedly agree with what BlueToff is saying here. Fact of the matter is any vaccine with 70/80/90% efficacy that prevents serious disease is a phenomenal response to any viral pathogen (flu vaccine is 40% efficacy). Quite simply, if we cant get out of it with these vaccines (tweaked for strains), then we will not get out of it full stop. Learning to live with this virus is using vaccines and treatments, not blunt lockdowns.

It's all up in the air at the moment in terms of what's possible. Hospitals are still rammed with Covid189 patients.

Bottom line for me is that last summer's free for all has to be ruled out. We cant go back to that. That will just accelerate us into another catastrophe and another lockdown...and another lockdown.

The release of restrictions similar to last summer can absolutely be repeated, because by April/May the most vulnerable will have been vaccinated and by July/August everyone else. The vaccines work against the dominant Kent strain, they provide spectacular defence against hospitilisations and death. Booster in the Autumn if a new strain becomes dominant (big if!).
The playing field is completely different to summer 2020, it can't be compared.

Hope your both doing good mate! Round one I was grand, round 2 floored me! I was Pfizer though!

Moderna #2 did me in.

I had a friend that had it with no issues. I do wonder if those that have significant side effects are also ones that would have had more severe disease.

As long as you are both ok and vaccinated everything is fine. Obviously I won’t know about dose 2 of the AZ for two or three months yet....

This is the thinking we should avoid at all costs. The vaccines aren't going to do what a lot of people think they'll do for the vulnerable. We already know the AZ vaccine is effective but only with younger age groups (it will still give protection of sorts to all groups like). We cant rely on the warm weather and the vaccines to place a firewall between us and the virus. It's obvious now that changes in behaviour is what we have to adopt in the long term along with a decisive track and trace system. We're some way off either of those.

This will all be a bad memory by the summer.....

I can appreciate your way of thinking also.
My perception is that the western mentality is not geared up towards behavioural change and complying with track and trace (It likely never will be) So the only way I can see us getting out of it is with vaccine boosters and new treatments.
