One dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine gives people about 90% protection from Covid by 21 days, according to an analysis of Israel’s mass vaccination programme. The data analysis, carried out by researchers from the University of East Anglia with UK government funding, runs counter to an earlier study from Israel which suggested that one dose may not give adequate protection. Prof Nachman Ash, in charge of the Israeli vaccination effort, said last month that a single dose appeared “less effective than we had thought”, and was also lower than Pfizer had suggested. Pfizer had said efficacy was 52% after a single dose.

But Prof Paul Hunter and Dr Julii Brainard say their reanalysis of the data, which has not been peer-reviewed, shows high protection just before the second dose was given at 21 days. However, they warn that the risk of infection doubled in the first eight days after vaccination – possibly because people became less cautious.

The UK took the decision to give the second doses of both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines up to 12 weeks after the first dose to maximise the number of people protected. “But this decision caused criticism from some quarters due in part to a belief that a single injection may not give adequate immunity,” said Hunter, from UEA’s Norwich medical school. “A recent non peer-reviewed pre-print paper based on Israel’s experience looked at data from 500,000 people who had been given the Pfizer vaccine. It reported that a single dose may not provide adequate protection. “But we saw a number of flaws in how they looked at the data including the fact that they did not attempt to estimate the effectiveness of the vaccine from day 18 onwards. This would have given a better indication of how effective a single dose of the vaccine could be if the second dose was delayed by up to 12 weeks.”

Case numbers in Israel increased among those given an initial dose, they say, up to eight days after vaccination, and then declined. “Surprisingly, the daily incidence of cases increased strongly after vaccination till about day eight – approximately doubling. We don’t know why there was this initial surge in infection risk but it may be related to people being less cautious about maintaining protective behaviours as soon as they have the injection,” said Hunter.

“We found that the vaccine effectiveness was still pretty much zero until about 14 days after people were vaccinated. But then after day 14 immunity rose gradually day by day to about 90% at day 21 and then didn’t improve any further. All the observed improvement was before any second injection.

“This shows that a single dose of vaccine is highly protective, although it can take up to 21 days to achieve this.”
He believes this should be reassuring for the UK. The researchers do not know how long protection will last after a single shot, he said, but “we are unlikely to see any major decline during the following nine weeks”.

I'd imagine France and Denmark have it pretty spot on at 6 weeks then. Hopefully we'll start to see that as an option as more and more vaccine doses and new vaccines become available to the UK, to minimise the risk.

Also, thought the No.10 briefing was again clear and informative on the vaccine today.

Looks like this rate of new doses will continue into about the start of March, when obviously it'll start to be more people getting their second dose.

Still, if it carries on like this plus J&J and Novavax get approval in the coming 2 months, sometime in June is not at all unimaginable for every adult to have had their first dose.

Both the Israel report and this one that contradicts it are pre-prints so need to wait for peer review (and more data) to find out which has it right.

Obviously would be good for everyone if it is the East Anglia scientists analysis that proves correct.

Vaccines arrived, a new year too, nothing changes. Just wake me up when I can go to WC without wearing a mask at a café and actually smile (and make sure everyone sees it) when I see something cute in the subway. This has gone too far! 11 months and counting.

!Antibodies in blood from people who’d been vaccinated with one dose of the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine showed a 10 fold reduction in their ability to neutralise a UK variant virus with the E484K mutation made in the lab.
Seven of the 15 individuals who’s blood were studied were completely unable to neutralise the UK variant including the E484K mutation.

All were over 80 — its known older people tend to have lower overall immune responses. However the study found when these individuals received their second dose of vaccine, they were able to neutralise the virus.

So this reduction isn’t enough to render the vaccine useless in patients who make a good immune response.

But it provides good evidence the UK variant is taking major steps towards avoiding our immune response.

Scientists are urging pubic health officials to step up surveillance for other instances of the the UK variant evolving mutations of concern".

We are country that prefers to pill pop its self away from illness in normal times times rather address change that promote prevention, similarly with allowing the importing and exporting of these variants. It's like talking to the yellow tinged alcoholic about the effect of their tipple has on their liver. Just have to wait until incapacitated through illness to intervene the multiple times, and while sober in these moments hopefully cut through.

What we need to get out of this are:

the vaccines
a government willing to make the hard decisions early on before any new surges
a test and trace programme that has teeth
a public that is disciplined to take instruction (and by that I mean ALL the public)

...we have the first of those, and that will be swamped by the inadequacies in the other three.

South East Asia - already doing fantastically well against Covid19 - will see the back of any major disruption from this virus within the next year. The west...and especially basket case Banana Republic's like the UK...will see this crisis drag out for years.

What planet is this educated fool living on?

Prof Andrew Hayward - a member of the UK government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) - says that, once the most vulnerable in society have been vaccinated, a return to normality is within reach.

He tells BBC Radio 4's Today Programme: "Once the most vulnerable people, particularly those over 50 and those with chronic illnesses, are vaccinated then yes I think we can see a significant return to normality.

"That, in addition to the fact coronavirus is a seasonal disease, I think will make a big difference and allow us to open up.

"I think what we'll see is a phased opening up as the vaccination levels increase, and then we will be more or less back to normal for the summer, I would imagine."

That is utter bollocks. No wonder we're snookered when we have a corrupt and murderous political class being informed by arseholes like this.

Havd to agree, quite mad I was reading Whittys comments yesterday to and was more worried by similar optimism, he’s CMO. All chips seem on the vaccine “curing” this.

Elsewise hear Oxford are about to do a study on mixing doses of vaccines, eg 1 dose Pfizer 1 dose AZ. The idea is to make the supply chain less complicated.

Maybe these science folk know more than us mere mortals? lol

Once everyones vaccinated life will go back to normal thats a guarantee. If it didnt there wouldn't be a life to go back to anyway and the scenes of people smashing and looting homes and businesses for food and items to sell to survive would become reality following an economic/societal collapse.

So far all the data suggests once vaccinated Covid poses little to no harm anymore in the vast majority of people. Obviously we'll have to keep an eye out for future mutations but we do that anyway with the flu and can always tweak the vaccines etc

Good times ahead come the summer mate x
