Forget vaccines for a second; this has always been about attitude and behaviour and the government's willingness to do the right thing to get on top of the pandemic.

I mentioned the other day the fantasticly successful record of those in SE Asia on the covid19 virus, here's a piece on Vietnam.

The Paul Hardcastle song popped into my head then. Covid n n n n nineteen.

If the virus isn't deadly to the majority of younger folk then surely prioritising health care workers of all ages is a daft strategy?

Obviously if the vaccine stops you catching it all together its worthwhile but providing those in care homes / most vulnerable are vaccinated why vaccinate some 24 year old care home worker with no underlying conditions?

Because they might get it elsewhere and give it to someone vulnerable they look after??????????

I don't understand people who can just look at the current numbers, in their country and around the world, and not find them staggering. And to think how much worse it could have been

I fully accept that the numbers are dreadful and that the lockdowns were (are) needed.

I think this latest one especially has come around because of mistakes from the government in the UK, who tried a tier system which might have worked for longer had they not undermined it by putting the most populated area of the country into Tier 2.

You can think all that and still ask questions over how data is presented and can be used.

A perfect example is all the headlines over 40 positive cases in the PL today - on a very minute scale.

That will be used by some to try and get the season cancelled/stopped, whatever. Yet the actual figures are spread over two rounds of testing compared to one, with over 800 more people tested than the previous week.

I haven’t had a cold or the flu all year.

I always get one or the other when summer and winter starts to hit and the weather changes.

Fully put that down to not being in the office every day and not riding public transport.

Whilst social distancing is about and various forms of lockdowns, numbers of every illness will decrease. It’s quite obvious tbh.
Just the simple measures of more people washing hands and being masked will have cut down a decent chunk of the transmission of regular bugs.

I almost always get a cold after being on transatlantic flight - think even after this is all over I’ll wear a mask more often on public transport.

I just think anybody treating vulnerable people should be as much of a priority for the vaccine as the vulnerable person themself. Common sense, really.

But said vulnerable people are being vaccinated. Also have to consider 1 vulnerable person in a care home probably has zero contact with anyone but the carer; the carer however has contact with plenty of vulnerable people.

Not if the vaccine doesn't stop someone catching/spreading it thats the point we dont know if the vaccine does that all we know is it limits severity of illness / hospitalisation numbers.

Until we get confirmation that vaccinating a 20 yr old care worker stops her spreading it to her 65 yr old nan we should focus on vaccinating said 65 year old nan first!

They are used to outbreaks. We are not.

Some on here were telling everyone its a hoax or a scam, way after Vietnam had stopped flights and stuff. Some in the country still are, and blaming 5G towers.

I clearly remember many times seeing Asian students at Bristol University wearing masks in Jan/Feb when I was visiting at the hospital next door to it. Didnt give it a moments thought, virus related, assumed it was air quality related.

Israel should provide a pretty definitive example soon enough as to the true efficacy of the various vaccines, and the degree to which any of them have the so-called "sterilising immunity" - the ability to prevent the passing on of the virus in addition to the immunological benefit.

Last I read - over 1 million people in a population of 8.8 million vaccinated. 24/7 operation throughout the country, with people actively being contacted and encouraged to benefit. Their readiness for a biological warfare attack has undoubtedly stood them in good stead.

Seems Netanyahu has used this opportunity to rebuild his credibility somewhat., at least with his own electorate as opposed to any other group. As much as I profoundly disagree and despair at some of the geopolitical policies of the Israeli state, this is impressive.

Really does depend on whether the vaccine makes you asymptomatic or whether it stops you from getting it. I don't think they fully know that yet? I do think vaccinating the people who are most likely to get very ill is the best approach either way.

Prof JVT said they dont know yet, no data, obvs. But he expects to have said data in a week or so.
