Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Liverpool in the last few days has seen a surge of taxis with plates from Warrington and Manchester, which would suggest people are coming to the city.

Good for business? People just going for meals? Maybe. The flip side to your point is that these areas are under restrictions because of their increased rates.

As such, they are potentially bringing the virus here, which can increase transmission - that may cost lives. Should the police just ignore such transgressions?

The restrictions are in place for a reason, and it would be much easier if people abided by the rules and we would therefore not require such 'pathetic' actions.

Personally, the law has to be upheld objectively. It's like when someone moans that they only parked on the white zig-zag lines out of a shop for a minute.

"Haven't they got something better to do?" Well no, and people wouldn't moan if they had actually witnesses the potential consequences...

... "Sorry your son was run over and killed because they stepped out, when their crossing light was green, but their view was blocked by a car on the zig-zags."

It's not about going for a meal; it's about stopping the transmission of a virus, which may kill someone.

I know mate. I shouldn't have got angry about it. It just... don't know, I don't think it's the right way to handle things. Whatever, it won't impact me because I haven't gone anywhere and won't plan on it until it's not a complete hassle to do so.

Why did Boris give those living in London and the South East an opportunity to escape their homes and no doubt spread this new variant to other parts of the country?

Has the guy got no brains.

35k new cases in one day... at the weekend.

This is going to be a disaster.

Maybe those scenes from St Pancreas are folk going home? Hardly anyone lives in central London. Compared to the 0000's who go there shopping/stuff.

There is literally none positive/cheerful/uplifting news atm on papers. Why do we depress people, they already are. If you don't put a glimmer of hope on the table, nobody can stay alert for this long.

The media report the news.

Sadly, currently, there is no glimmer of hope.

There is. But it is a glimmer.

Once the oldies get vaxed, the hospital admissions will plummet. But sadly, that wont stop the spread in the next 3/4 weeks. Tier 4, everywhere, might.

Folk being a bit less brain dead might help as well.

Saw my lads today, (outside, for 5 minutes) for the first time in months to give them their pressies. (Ace retro trackie tops!). The eldest had seen sommet in John Lewis he wanted to get for his GF. Went to The Mall, big place, saw the crowds, and went back home. "She can have it for her Birthday instead" He is 24.

Saturday before Christmas is always carnage in central London with people coming in from all over the place to go to the shops. I imagine all the major train stations will have been similar. The announcement was made at 4pm, what are they supposed to do? Immediately shut every train station stranding thousands of people in central London where as @roydo said barely anyone lives?

Every time there has been an announcement about changes to tiers/lockdowns there have usually been a couple of days before they come in. This one was 8 hours.

I think he is absolutely useless and the handling of this current situation has been awful as usual. But on this one single thing I don't think there is any other way to have done things.

They shouldn't have been travelling anyway as the city is in tier 3, which clearly states you shouldn't travel outside your local area. Sadly, people are knobheads.

I doubt it mate. St Pancras doesn't really serve anywhere that local, and certainly not from the concourse shown in the video. That bit of the station is servicing Derby, Sheffield, Nottingham etc. I posted an article earlier from the Isle of Wight complaining that the midnight ferry was rammed. That's not going to be people working on a Saturday night.

People shouldn't have been travelling, and you just hope that the infectious nature of this mutation doesn't make this exodus a complete ballsache for the country.

Oh. Triffic.

It was happening even before the scenes at St Pancras tbh. The wife cycles around a fair few residential areas for work and there were loads of cars being loaded up on Friday. This thing has always been largely self-policed, and bar relatively straightforward things like mask wearing, I'm not sure many people can be arsed any more unless the grim reaper has knocked on their door.

There's just a blithe lack of awareness I fear. We've been speaking a bit to our great-Aunt in Czech who had it recently. She lived through the war and said her experience in hospital was far worse. Things were so bad they were pulling in anyone with a modicum of medical training. Veterinary students, physios, all sorts, often straight from their 1st year with a couple of weeks behind them. Suffice to say, few were in any way prepared for what they faced.

I suspect a trip to the local ICU would do a lot of people the world of good in terms of their awareness of this.

Doing my level best to avoid it. Had a guts full a few months back.

But you are right. The message from a clearly annoyed Hancock on Marr this morning was pretty much on the nail. Marr was trying, as per, to trip a politician up. Hancock said this was out of control in the SE, and pleaded for folk to act like they have it.

Made perfect sense to me.
