Don't know if it's already been mentioned, my missus was just saying that one of her friends who lives by London has just told her that because the infection rates are ridiculously going up they are now going into tier 4.
Boris is speaking about it right now.

On a percentage level, how many people listening to this will pay any attention to him?

5%? At the most?
I do think a lot of people, who've already made plans, will simply ignore the restrictions. Any reduction in mixing will hopefully have some impact though.

We were meeting up as a family on christmas eve instead of christmas day. I don't really see the point in that change.
Look beyond yourself and there are a lot of people who have plans from the 23th right through to the 27th or at least a few days regardless of the restrictions.

The idea will be that it will reduce the number of families mixing across the spectrum of days: e.g. Family A meeting B and C, then A meeting D and E.

All while B meets X, Y and C meets... For sensible people like yourself, there won't be much change, but I'd guess you aren't' the type of person it's aimed at.

No where did I say 80000 deaths was nothing! Approx 40000 each year die from flu. My argument was there is no lockdown every year due to the amount of flu deaths. Every death is a tragedy but life must go on. There is nothing wrong with people saying we have approached this situation in th wrong manner. This is my thinking now. But I understand the counter argument and people are entitled to their own opinions without getting shouted down.
The financial cost of these lockdownsis horrendous. I was fully behind the first lockdown but for me we cannot afford to go into continuous lockdown. Hopefully we can get clearance for this Oxford vaccine so we can all get out off this situation
Because we have vaccines for flu? Look at these numbers (from ONS):
  • In November 2020, there were 47,910 deaths registered in England, 6,241 deaths more than the five-year average (2015 to 2019) for November; in Wales, there were 3,363 deaths registered, 576 deaths more than the five-year average for November.
  • The coronavirus (COVID-19) was the leading cause of death in November 2020 for the first time since May 2020 in both England (accounting for 18.1% of all deaths registered in November) and Wales (21.6% of all deaths); looking at all deaths registered in January to November 2020, COVID-19 was the second most common cause of death in England and Wales (after dementia and Alzheimer's disease).

And thats WITH lockdowns and social restrictions. Imagine how many more would have died without?
