Look beyond yourself and there are a lot of people who have plans from the 23th right through to the 27th or at least a few days regardless of the restrictions.

The idea will be that it will reduce the number of families mixing across the spectrum of days: e.g. Family A meeting B and C, then A meeting D and E.

All while B meets X, Y and C meets...

It's an effing virus. Of course it changes.

Most of the scientific community in the UK have said that all viruses mutant and most commonly they are less virulent. But they haven't got enough Data on this new variant yet and wouldn't know about for a couple of weeks. The flu virus mutates very year that's why there is a new flu every year

Both statements on their own are probably true. Cases are rapidly increasing down south and it is a mutated version.

They appear to have no conclusive proof however that the mutation is directly causing the increase (“may cause more virulent transmission”) as opposed to their lamentable lack of timely intervention.

They had also no doubt worked out that the “Boris saves Christmas” headlines weren’t going to look too clever in the New Year.

I do think a lot of people, who've already made plans, will simply ignore the restrictions. Any reduction in mixing will hopefully have some impact though.
