This new virus mutation and the announcement tonight: if its out of control why are they (presumamably) going to be leaving open for business restaurants (and pubs if the serve food) and retail in Tier 2 areas?

If it's out of control you lockdown nationally, like Germany and the Netherlands and Italy and Austria etc are doing.
Do you really believe the tory government and this new strain propaganda?

Surely you didn't support London being in tier 2 this month?

By the way, can anyone tell me whether this 'rapid spreading mutation' is being flagged up elsewhere at this moment in time?

Along with many others, I trust other governments and their scientific advisers much more than the UK Banana Republic's.

Just checked our area again on the Government website. Bearing in mind we are about 35 square miles in size, we have 0-2 infections, a N/A rate out of 100,000, and a colour of white meaning Covid suppressed. Still in Tier 3 obviously.....
Rutland? Lovely county. For once I agree with you: does seem strange

I can't believe these utter jokers are standing by the 'new variant' line.

It's an effing virus. Of course it changes.
That's my suspicion. However, if they are hyping this up, how do they leave us in Tier 2 areas open to it's 'rapid infection rates'?

It makes no sense to play around with T4/3/2 - a national lockdown only makes sense.

I really don't like being in this "conspiracy" camp either. Hate it in fact; I usually laugh at them as they're all, usually, nonsense.

But what else can I do about this nonsense?

As @davek says above, if this is REALLY a massively lethal, virulent, scary superspreader mutation... then why the hell aren't we locking down nationally?

The only outcome I can come to is that they need an airtight excuse to lockdown London, whereas the north they didn't give a toss about.

The tier system has been a disaster, it really has.

One of the many annoying things during this whole pandemic is the inability to stick to a set time for a conference. Always late, doesn’t hold much hope that these are the clowns leading us

Where does 40,000 deaths from flu each year come from mate.

2018/19 flu deaths where 1,692.

The average for England since 2014 is 17,000 pa.

Thats a very big difference.
This virus is not comparable to the flu at all.

I got the figure from that article. I agree it's not always the correct figure. Even you say the average is 17000 a year just for England and that figure is with the flu vaccine being available every year.
Due to those figures that you quote yourself should we have gone into lockdown to protect those average 17000 people who died every year. Should we have closed pubs, gyms shop etc.
This is just my viewpoint. I'm.notbasking people to agree with me. It's an emotive subject.
Most of the people who have died had underlying issues. Covid accelerated their death. I am.not saying that covid isn't a deadly disease. And I hope that I don't get it. But is it worth crashing the economy for with billions of debt,. crashing small business that people have spent years building up.
I fully supported the first lockdown but I've changed my mind now. I don't bthink lockdown works. But that is just my view. Not asking for anyone to agree with me.
