The risk for below 60s is the same % as flu thats essentially a confirmed fact. A small number of people can get very ill but its not common. Over 90% of deaths in the UK are over 65 and about 9% of the remainder below 65s are in at risk groups that will also be vaccinated. Thats around 99% of UK deaths stopped overnight.

Yes, I'm aware of the stats... I'm just saying I don't expect the world to go back to normal overnight with no restrictions at all.

We're gonna kick this virus's ass.

And credit where it is due to whoever is making the moves that is putting the UK at the vanguard of the vaccine rollout.

Yeh i agree on that, the period were they still want everyone to wear masks when deaths are very low will be strange.
While the virus exists it will be necessary to use masks. They minimise the chance of an infected person passing it on.
They
They're also useful against spreading flu and colds.

Technically the virus will exist forever. Once the majority of the population have been vaccinated the mask mandates need to be removed.
Exactly, it’s not going anywhere

I expect social distancing measures etc to be in place to an extent in ‘normal’ life (you know, taking extra care going to shops etc, perhaps even still wearing masks)

but events etc - come late next spring/summer - should be allowed to happen. Too many people have lost their entire livelihoods already and unless you are happy to fill your life with work and exercise, it’s nice to have something else to look forward to - y’know, be able to go to a gig or a match

Why? As various right wing types have pointed out, tens of thousands of people die from flu every year and mask wearing on (public transport especially) would prevent some of that.

I guess the mask instructions for things like transport, supermarkets etc will still be required.

but, is there any need for people to not be allowed to go and - for example - stand at a bar, next summer, when the vaccine has been rolled out? Or not to be able to go to the footy or a gig (outdoor maybe more sensible than indoor until after the summer, perhaps)
