Why? As various right wing types have pointed out, tens of thousands of people die from flu every year and mask wearing on (public transport especially) would prevent some of that.

All year round? Maybe if they knew there was a particularly bad outbreak they could bring it in again but people need to live. At the end of the day at some point we're all going to die, no point living a restricted life continuously.

Why can’t we be expected to wear a mask in packed tubes / trains / buses? Countries who got much less hammered by this do that all year round and have for years.

No countries do it all year round? In Asia its common to wear a mask when you believe you are ill but everyone doesn't constantly wear a mask?

It won’t. People will probably be a bit mindful of being out if they have a cold or something and might wear one, but for the most part we’ll be rid of them.

Will be a while yet though.

If masks were kept in society long term then they would kill far more people than save them.

We won't see an end to them for months as a precaution but long term they have to go.

Masks would have a limited impact on flu deaths as a lot of flu deaths come from nursing homes and hospitals. You'd have to make the residents wear masks constantly.

Potentially people may start wearing a mask when they are ill similar to Asia but people won't want to wear them in the long term.

How?

There is actually evidence of that. It promotes risky behaviour as you feel invulnerable - it's a concept that applies to things like PrEP, which prevents AIDs but then makes you less likely to use a condom, meaning other diseases then thrive.

It's called the Peltzman Effect.

Masks should only be worn when absolutely required IMO.
