Can anyone explain to me how it seems like everyone in the world predicted another wave during this exact timeframe, and yet no one seemed to do a darn thing to prepare for it or even better, prevent it...

It’s like seeing a car out of control come skidding down the road and just standing in the way thinking, “Eh maybe it’ll miss me...”

Competing political needs, health, economy, public opinion and political collateral , any one of those needs has been at the forefront of decision making around the world since March at anyone time.

Plenty of simple steps that could’ve been taken. Why not re-introduce state wide mask mandates in preparation of the expected surge rather than in reaction to it? Would’ve pissed people off at the time but maybe that’s better for keeping businesses open than a reactionary lockdown? I’m no public health expert but it all seems very reactionary across the board even though we knew what was coming our way.

Wouldn’t be an expert on public health in the States around this. But I’m surprised if Masks aren’t compulsory at this stage as a matter of public health policy, regardless it should be a personal common sense precaution at this stage.

From a political I can think of pretty big political reason why politicians in the States would want to alienate people this Autumn, sad but probably likely.

I agree mate. Tons more could've been done by most countries IMO.

Good point, and that whole business was absolutely terrible. Believe it or not, thalidomide is still used a drug today though as a treatment for cancer, and is a small molecule not a vaccine. Safety testing of drugs/vaccines and the mechanisms behind side effects are much better understood today, though the point raised is well taken...
It's an emotional good point...

It's who is going to be responsible if there are complications from any of the vaccines, it's all well and good Van Tam telling an emotional story on the advice he gave his mother.

However, they need to be very clear and upfront on product liability related to all COVID-19 vaccines going forwards because it's going to be an absolute gift indemnification and how that relates to the Coronavirus Act 2020, I suspect they will be [Poor language removed].

I get where you are coming from, but that wasnt a vax. It was a pill to cure morning sickness.

The medical science behind a vax is different than that for a "cure". Its why we dont have a cure for cancer, just better treatments, and we dont have a cure for flu, just a vax.

Possible side effects following C19 infection also may not appear for several years.
We'll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, vaccinate.
We do not know.
Thanks for your replies, do you think there's a chance the government may put in some sort of, at own risk caveat to having the vaccine.

You give people by in large too much credit. People are pretty dumb.

And regarding political reasons, I currently live in a blue run state and we’re a complete mess at the moment. Didn’t do anything really, and now we’re on the brink of locking down again.

Scary death number today. How many weeks do we think before the lockdown starts to take effect?

Cases have pretty much plateaued and, though hospitalisations are still rising across the country, that rise is slowing down. Neither of those changes have very much, if anything, to do directly with the lockdown, but I'd hope to see cases start dropping in something like 7 to 10 days. Deaths aren't likely to start dropping much, if at all nationally before the end of the month.

More important ( for those of us that live locally ) is that cases and daily hospitalisations in the North-West are both dropping , so we're past the peak here, and, across the region, at least for the moment, R is below 1. Deaths in the North-West also seem to have at least plateaued, if not actually peaked.

It's still grim here, and hospitals are still scarily busy, because, although less people are getting admitted, it takes time for that to feed through to less numbers in hospitals overall, but I'd say we're in a similar position to London was in the first peak. So we were hit hard and earlier than most, but we're coming out of it earlier.

Im hoping you can buy the vaccine privately I'll definitely consider forking out providing it wasn't scandalously priced.
Nah I'll just wait. I'm in the lowest priority group by a big margin, my job works from home fine and loads of people need it more than me, regardless of price. More demand = less supply = higher price.

When and where the vaccination must have taken place

You must normally have been vaccinated before your 18th birthday, unless the vaccination was during an outbreak of disease in the UK or the Isle of Man, or it was against:

  • poliomyelitis
  • rubella
  • meningococcal group C
  • human papillomavirus
  • pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 (swine flu)
  • meningococcal group W before your 26th birthday

There may be a few options, Pfizer seems to be getting their first, but the key might be ease of storage, distribution and administering and other candidates might hold the advantage there.

The Pfizer vaccine needs to be kept at -80, administered in two doses 3-4 weeks apart, is very expensive as a result governments have been charged £29.47 per dose, obviously governments are buying in bulk.

The AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine should be next, anticipated in Dec, it’s easier to administer and store and thus easier to distribute and in much cheaper governments being charges £2.23 for a single dose.

There are many other candidates, one that may be very hopeful on the key criteria I mention above is the Johnson and Johnson one, it’s one dose and that might be a game changer if successful as it cuts logistics in distribution and roll out in half. They are already in mass production.

The huge question emerging even with a vaccine, is the length of immunity, we don’t know yet, those who have had Covid have shown immunity for long weeks/short months, so we don’t know how frequently people might need a vaccine yet, it’s possible it might be a couple or more times a year.
