SAGE have been recommending a circuit breaker lockdown which wouldn't make a significant impact. Cases in Wales have barely changed. This lockdown will end up being on until the Spring.

the number of cases "barely changing" during the lockdown is a sign that its working - during the first national lockdown deaths spiked for a couple of months after it was brought in

Another lockdown with schools and universities open seems utterly pointless to me.

I’d close hospitality and schools down, and have retail re-impose strict social distancing and capacity measures as they were when we came out of lockdown.

SAGE have done nothing throughout this crisis but add to the sense of panic and create long lasting issues. All of them trying to cover up and blame other for their failings. The bastards should be hung from the lampposts.

So have most countries in Europe not seen an enormous second spike in the past month (since SAGE recommended a national lockdown)? Are we ourselves not seeing an enormous second spike now?

So very sad

A lot of debate around Covid tends to get polarised between remaining physically safe and taking precautions and the impact of mental health and restrictions. Personally i dont separate the two, i think of mental health impact as a symptom of Covid.

Its stories in the article you post above, we are seeing across the world and were we need to be creative to best support people in the vacuum of enforced separation.

The cases don't instantly go down as soon as a lockdown starts. They have one week left to run on it, a week/2 weeks after that then you will see the benefits.

All this is tempered by the fact that Wales maybe in a much better place at that point but if people are allowed to travel to Wales from England then the figures could jump back up far quicker than they should have done had we all had a circuit break at the same time.

For a lockdown to be effective it has to be like Melbourne, all schools closed, majority of businesses closed and people barely leaving the house. This diet lockdown approach just means in 2 months time the same problem is happening again.

There’s a second spike in terms of infections without the same level of hospitalisations or deaths thanks to a higher level of testing. The observer/Hawthorne effect is very much in play.

The UK arent alone in this. Our SAGE here (Nephet) recommended a lock down (slightly less harsh then the first) in the first week of of October. The Goverment decided to implement some restrictions but felt that society and the economy needed to mentally prepare for a second lock down and wouldn't do it over night.

They eventually announced ours two weeks ago, but with a few days to prepare, we went into it on the 21st of Oct and are a week and half into it now and it is to last until the 1st of Dec - though some sounds that it might be lifted earlier. Our cases peaked at 1200 odd in the second wave so far before lock down, we had 762 yesterday.

This was inevitable unfortunately in Autmun/winter, i think some governments have become a bit hubris and tried other measures to see could they avoid a full lock down, they haven't worked unfortunately and most of Europe will be in a second i suspect shorter lockdown this week or the week after.

The Virus is gripping Europe again, the UK is just seeing what every country is seeing, its the natural season for growth in infectious diseases in Europe it was always inevitable, its individual governments reactions that will be appraised at this stage.

Does missing/delaying a month of school really hamper development that much? It’s hardly like they’re near exam time right now. Seems a bit unnecessary to me to keep them open.
