It works to manage the critical stage where doing nothing does more damage than any lockdown would.
But you're right it's just a delay, it's not the cure. Unless you can take the even tougher decisions to lockdown the borders thereafter as per NZ. We will come out of any future lockdown and people will think it's safe to go back to doing exactly what they did before the virus and the government will assist as they don't want businesses such as easyjet folding. That will accelerate us towards another lockdown - however we hope a vaccine would not be too far away by the time that is required.

National lockdown? It's not a lockdown if you are still keeping schools/universities/colleges and non essential shops open

It is to a degree (just couched in civil servant language), but isn't particularly robust due to the number of external factors and is very dependent on Government action. Ministers will have that figure in mind when they bring in a more restrictive lockdown.

You look at PMs of the past, Major, Blair, Brown and even May, not a single one of them would be this incompetent at dealing with this. Same in the US, Obama, Bush and Clinton would have handled things better than the Orange Goblin
I’d say primary schools are.
Colleges should have been remote learning.
Secondary schools I’d have fluctuated depending on local infection rate/spread

They are but they are definitely a driving force of infection rates. I don't care what the government say on the matter.
So to keep schools open then everyone must accept harsher restrictions in other parts of daily life. Or you switch to remote tutoring and you can then open the other side.

I think the answer lies between in person and remote learning. Classes check in with teacher at staggered/rotad times throughout the week to review online learning which is accessed for the rest of the week. With my safeguarding hat on, this means that we can physically see that the kids are safe as well.
Unfortunately, I think that boat sailed when the government cut all the laptop funding for disadvantaged families.

If this government perform yet another u turn and instruct another national lock (which I think is needed) then it just goes to show just how inept and totally useless they are.
