It's not just our country Tim, look at all the other European countries locking down. No one takes delight in doing that but it has to be done.

The trick would be to do it now and not wait any longer for the numbers to get worse. The longer they wait the longer the lockdown period will be, to me this is the most annoying part.

I'm not even sure lockdown works. Its just a tool to delay things.

Its the worst time of the year to lockdown as well.

I'm just tired of all this

Particularly depressing since we’ve already gone through the “should we , shouldn’t we” part once before and so should have put in place much better trigger mechanisms.

Then make use of the Nightingale Hospitals that were never used.

The government are completely incompetent but imposing ridiculous flawed lockdowns on people is not going to stop it.

They haven't got the staff to have them fully functional for poorly people with respiratory problems. Not only COVID this time but people with flu and other respiratory viruses and illness's...

But that delay is critical to ensure hospitals don’t get overwhelmed.

PARIS, Oct 30 (Reuters) - France on Friday reported 49,215 new confirmed coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, compared to 47,637 on Thursday and a record high of 52,010 on Sunday.

A new national lockdown came into effect on Friday in France in an effort to put the brakes on a COVID-19 epidemic that officials say risks spiralling out of control.

The number of people in France who have died from COVID-19 rose by 256 over 24 hours to 36,565, the health ministry said. The cumulative number of cases now stands at 1,331,984.

New hospitalisations over the last seven days reached 16,258 against 15,786 on Thursday. This included 2,401 people in intensive care units against 2,278 on Thursday.

President Emmanuel Macron said late on Wednesday that France might start to ease back lockdown measures once COVID infections fell back to about 5,000 per day.

This is our future.

Of course lockdown works.

Thats a silly thing to say, we literally have evidence of it working this year.

Yes it works as a delaying tool, but the virus then comes back.

And people affected will be left in a tough position by another lockdown. They will need to be allowed to then go back to work.

How do we balance all these things? I have no idea....

People who can't work need to be helped by the government. But how do we help those in need, through the welfare system. But tax receipts will dry up with mass unemployment and then we have big problems. It all worries me.

Sadly there's no other options on the table.

There never has been.

France, Spain, Belgium all announced lockdowns, The Uk to follow.

If there were alternatives, I'm sure somebody would have thought of 1 by now.
S Korea’s track and trace system plus widespread masking and social distancing would have been my preference.

But between government incompetence and Western populations generally being less compliant with even comparatively mild restrictions then the heavier ones seem to sadly be our only option to avoid overwhelmed medical systems.

This lockdown wont even work, nobody will comply, its just going to be an utter farce.

Its what happens with weak leadership.

Starve kids, then try and lockdown the country, good luck with that Boris you piss-stained tramp.

Given the projected numbers constantly being shared about , what else is it to call it?

Right now they predict 84 thousand to die this winter from covid alone. Which may be true , it may not be true , we don't know that. However taking into account how many die during the winter period anyway, that would surely put deaths then at some sort of ridiculous high into the hundreds of thousands over a 3 month period

Where alternatively doctors and nurses will be treating a lot more people and saving lives .

Perhaps more lives will be saved by the expertise of our health specialists in hospitals than the projected numbers which seem to be writing anyone's chances off if they end up in hospital currently.

Compared to 6 months ago when they didn't have that knowledge
Where is that from?
