...thoughts and prayers going out to all those caught up in the collateral damage.
Big fan of the lad at the front stood up hald arsedly going along with an event he clearly isn't in to and would much rather be at home on his ps4

Rishi Sunak apparently working on a new scheme to subsidise wages and get people back working part time.

At least someone in the government has some idea what they are doing

I can’t stand this government but the financial package was overall a positive and I’ll take the fact they’re looking at it again as another .

When you see people out not wearing masks or social distancing then it's sadly not that surprising. These restrictions aren't particularly punitive, but if people are going to be stupid then they will undoubtedly become so. We've all got to take some personal responsibility for how we behave. I mean when I was quarantining last month, no one from the government checked up on me (bad on them), but equally, had they done so they would have found me home throughout (good on me). I've read stats saying that just 20% of those who were supposed to quarantine actually did so. What do we expect to happen when we behave like that?

But I can only speak from personal experience, albeit it's limited.

I go to the same 2/3 shops/supermarkets and everyone wears masks. The times i've been on a train, everyone was wearing a mask on the train and in the stations.

I know people who have been abroad and have quarantined or are quarantining, and equally so I know people who haven't.

Regardless, none of this would actually be leading to the possibility of a stricter lockdown (i.e. nothing open again bar the essentials) if the government knew it's a*** from its elbow.

Yes Dave. I’m misrepresenting your viewpoint that Sweden ‘failed’ and wasn’t part of Murder Inc. Oh wait. I’m not.
I dont know where to start with that. You've COMPLETELY misrepresented what I stated. I stated that the Swedes had adopted (and continue to) a laissez faire approach to this crisis and that the early period of this crisis saw the UK government do that. I didn't say we were the same societies.

Just read what's there and not what you want to be there (or think is there). It isn't that difficult if you have any intellect at all.

All I hear now is people moaning about current goverment policy.. frankly it's a bit pathetic. Genuine question for those criticising - what, PRECISELY, would you do that the governement isn't doing?

Please be specific:

What exact changes do you want to see?
What quantifiable results do you expect from it?
How will it be paid for?

Policymakers are in an impossible situation here. They need to strike a balance between protecting the vulnerable, protecting individual liberties, and supporting the economy. All 3 can claim equal importance and yet pull public policy in different directions.

Around 34,000 deaths in August 2020 that’s over 2000 less than the last 5 yearly average!
Dementia and Alzheimer’s being the biggest cause.

You said they had failed and latter said they stopped being a Nordic country by adopting such measures. You lumped them in with us the US and Brazil.

Stop trying to claim Intellectual superiority over people David, it’s pretty embarrassing for you because you really aren’t that sharp and more transparent than a window.

Whats your opinion on hospitals being overwhelmed in spain, italy and new york during the first wave?. How would you prevent this happening again in the event of a full 're-opening'?

'sake. One last time for the hard of learning...

I lumped their approach to the crisis in with them, I didn't state they were the same SOCIETIES.

Please read that carefully.

Here is an interesting take on the situation from Lord Sumption. Gives Boris and co a kicking and raises interesting legal positions on what the government has done.

He looks like he thinks he has his mobile in his hand recording it but doesn't realise he's left it on the table.

Well yeah but it's not ideal and I would probably need to shout lol

It was just an example though. Letting our older relatives live in isolation over winter with little or no interaction other than over the phone, is pretty serious to me. There are serious social issues it could cause and it's not as simple as just telling folk to cut themselves off from others.

Sort of a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation though. Everyone sees everyone then you may end up seeing her suffer/lose her through illness and then not be able to support her, visit in hospital etc. if the situation gets worse.

It's an awful predicament but people can't have their cake and eat it, you either want to see a close group of family and friends and forget the wider contacts and going to packed beaches/pubs/gigs/sports events or they want to do all of that but shield the most vulnerable, which means not seeing them. Catch-22 for most people.
