No mate she's on the other side of Brooklyn, about 6 miles away. Father in Law died a few years ago (leukemia) and was a Vietnam vet and was smart and well prepared for all sorts. She's been lost without him. Biked over there the other day, she said she had loads of food - literally found cans from 2008, FFS.

Ah that's tough. I can't imagine that sort of loss for a partner.

Ha that sounds like my grandads house, we knew he was buying food and stashing it but he had put wild stuff all over the place to keep safe.
3 cases of champagne in his bedroom.
Stored next to the radiator, completely undrinkable lol.

How likely is she to need or want to go out?

Is her place on a block or out of town?

Found white wine from 2010 at the bottom of her bedroom closet a few months ago, made her open it and taste how [Poor language removed] it was haha

She lives on a block and is prone to going out on walks. Not the end of the world that, really, but has to be conscious of where. She has heart problems so underlying health and all that. I just said if you want some fresh air over the next few weeks try and sit in your back yard for a bit and do some gardening or something since it's spring.

For someone who had a career as a science teacher, she's remarkably lax about listening to scientists, and one of them who is always like "if I were you..." advice wise but never listens to others advice.

She sounds ace.

Yeah with her age and conditions she would be high risk but we just don't know what the risk parameters really are. I'm worried about my Dad (cardiac condition and stroke) and my mum who has bad asthma. Both late 50s but you just don't know.

The only real thing apart from trying to keep her immune system healthy is to keep her isolated as you probably know. The thing about barrier nursing isn't really that it's difficult, you've just got to be very organised and she will probably go mad wanting to get out.
Nobody in or out. Get rid of external food packaging and leave outside the house. Wear a mask and surgical suit if you can get one. Monitor everything. The mail. Wipe surfaces and clean hands repeatedly.
To be honest just keep her in the house and leave her shopping outside for her.

That's all i can think of right now sorry mate

Thanks mate, it helps to be heard and it helps to care. Very much appreciate your time.

Best wishes and good health to you and your family.

China and italy locked down too late- they tried to tell us to do it early, but we didn't listen. Poland ect are going full lockdown early- so we can contrast.

If you have cold/flu symptoms- you should stay at home for 7/7 or 14/7 if still symptomatic. I'm sure you can entertain yourself for that period of time.

Why will hospitals be under more pressure in a second wave? A sudden single peak will absolutely cripple the NHS- I'm not even gonna make light of this. People who shouldn't die, will die because of lack of ventilators, staff, and other equipment.
Edit: See @LinekersLegs above post for epidemiological explanation.

Every bit of evidence I've seen from the Spanish Flu indicates that the second wave was worse than the first wave. If the Wuhan Flu goes the same way then it is going to be very scary.

It's already scary mate, best response it take a stiff upper lip, gallows humor and hope to hell those in power know what they are doing.

Aww damn just read the last bit. Ok let's start again, stiff upper lip, gallows humour and have a drink. And moo.

At least we've got some time to think up some really funny last words.
