People have just accepted as a standard practise medical term.

Literally just labelled the general population as beasts in the field to operate as viral cannon fodder until it is burnt out and some of us animals have accidentally lived on.

It appears that you're operating under the understanding that the virus can be stopped by keeping people in a permanent state of lock down. The chief medical officer seems to be operating under the understanding that this isn't going to happen, and the best way to protect the most vulnerable people until a vaccine is developed is to do this. Please don't get dragged in by people like Sentinel, who appears to be soiling his pants in panic. Now isn't the time to be following such people or being dragged down by them. Stay strong. Follow the instructions.

That will seriously affect how much i enjoy my posts, I'm not sure I'm willing to let go of that just yet.

@Sentinel is this true, have you soiled yourself? You have brought shame upon this herd

Apparently that is the reasoning, personally I'd like to see the peer reviewed papers backing it. This a virus that nobody knows anything about, how it mutates etc. Quite simply at this time we know it can't be stopped and that's all we know.

Wouldn't it have been judicious once the clear and evident threat was there to take steps to prevent it's arrival. Instead we apparently have a "herd immunity" paradigm that is increasingly becoming nonsensical and downright dangerous.

There's been more than enough time to adequately prepare. Unless of course it was allowed to prevail in the first place.

Which is far more damaging to the psyche of the nation and our democracy.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your posts, but what is done is done. We've failed to prepare. However, the people who are really going to pay for that failure aren't the ones who really were in charge of preparing.

We can't go back in time and redo that. The only situation that can be handled is the one we are currently in. Then hold those accountable for the mistakes and pragmatically safeguard for the future. Again, I could be misunderstanding your posts, and the variation of preparedness is different from even city to city.

But do you not believe in flattening the curve? Have you seen the difference in how South Korea and Hong Kong managed this versus western Europe and the US? We can say now in hindsight how much the leaders failed, but we are here now and have to deal with the situation as is. Political philosophies have to take some what of a back seat to this in the time being. If taking drastic measures can slow the spread and allow for better care, isn't that the right thing to do?

Again, I could be misunderstanding your point, but it sounds like you want traditional freedoms to triumph over all costs. I get the give me liberty or give me death sentiment, and that has been traditionally the side I choose.

Yet you choosing to take chances isn't allowing other the same decision. Some may not want that risk, and that is equally their right. Your doing whatever you want can put others in far more danger. Again, this isn't terrorism, or an oppressive regime. This is disease.

take the initiative and isolate themselves?

I'm not a believer in the "people are stupid" meme. In fact, I think that generally folks are very intelligent and will self isolate freely. What does concern me however is governments who label their citizens as part of a "herd" That troubles me deeply. Are we to be branded with numbers next?

This is an emergency and it has to be addressed via bipartisan, transparent talks. Pandering into the arms of conspiracy theorists who claim we are merely sheeple will give fuel to the fire.

We are a democracy backed with fortitude and conviction, it's time we acted like one.

Granted, I'd prefer it to be called something 'nicer' than herd immunity. Community immunity would have been much nicer and filled me up with a warm fuzzy feeling.

How about people actually doing what I've done? Take responsibility for their own lives instead of being forced to do so. Once I've done my two weeks national service there is no chance in hell that I'm going into isolation again.

I

Strong words from the man who may or may not be sitting passionately in his own faeces.

What say you @Bruce Wayne are you indeed an ass?
And do you feel this enabled you to be a better mod in hindsight?

I'm undoubtedly an ass. I'm also married to a nurse so am 99% sure that this thing will knock on our door at some point very soon, and it'd be nice if society didn't descend into chaos but dealt with this like adults rather than spreading panic online in the ridiculous belief that you know better than Chris Witty. Give. Head. Wobble.

I understand that and appreciate it. I haven't had to do it, but I think I'm heading towards it given the state.

For what it's worth I manage a small business (not mine), I've been told by the owner if I don't feel safe not even if I have symptoms, I don't have to come in to work and I'll get paid until it passes. I work retail, so I can't really do any work work from home.

A lot of people are like just take the free money, and I see your point. That has to be awful to be stuck with absolutely nothing to do. However, I don't feel right just collecting a check and doing nothing until we are absolutely closed.

More to your point though, I'm not so concerned about whether I'll get through it. Odds are I will. I'm 30, no pre-existing condition. However, my concern isn't about myself. Wouldn't you feel awful passing it along to someone elderly? Again, I work retail so I deal with probably a thousand people plus indirectly daily. My concern is about giving it to someone who may give it to someone. Compounding things.

I can't imagine how bad it sucks, but I just don't want to compound things. Staying at home for the time being to keep things manageable seems like a relatively easy sacrifice in the grandscheme of things.

I am in a pretty good position though. I live in the suburbs, with 2 friends as roommates, and another 2 friends live next door. We have big yards and everything, so it's not like I'm stuck in a small one bedroom apartment in the city.

I get it, I just don't want to pass it on and contribute to problems those at risk face.

Indeed, and hopefully communities will come together, help out the elderly etc so they don't have to brave Apocalypse Now at their local Lidl.

I didn't say i know better than Chris Witty. I'm just an average Joe, man of the herd.
I just have thoughts on what may happen, as do you.
Nobody has accused me of spreading panic. I have tried to spread love and laughter at this trying time.
I can't help it if i paint a picture with my words and then that picture grows wings and becomes an eagle. You've got to let my eagle fly Bruce, let all of our eagles soar.

Ok mate. Are we putting cards on the table? I work in law enforcement and there is absolutely no reason to panic but as I've stated in my post history, there are concerns here. Regarding civil liberties and health. So get off your high horse, stop flinging mud it isn't helpful. Instead try joining the discussion in a helpful manner. And by the way thanks for the work your wife is doing.

I've read a few of your posts over the past 24 hours or so, and they've contained more than a twinge of utter panic, hence why I've written what I have.
