Another issue with herd immunity is there is absolutely NO way the hospitals could house that many sick people from COVID-19 on top of all the other illnesses people have.

Which is the main issue with this policy - to do it properly, you'd have to ensure the most vulnerable groups are isolated and that the NHS is less likely to collapse by the massive increase in illness. They've done none of that it seems (though some NHS trusts are expanding capacity, but on an individual basis) and instead seem to want it to get bad as quickly as possible, in the hope that it goes away.

As a medic, the herd immunity thing is pure crap. If the most vulnerable in society were isolated till the rest of us (honestly 60% has been properly just pulled out of nowhere) had recovered (the end of 7 days of isolation we will likely still be shedding viruses but just not enough to likely pass it on), then we may be a suitable immunological barrier to prevent further rapid spread to those at risk of dying. The government are playing loose and fast with potentially millions who will get very unwell, and possibly a quarter million who will die.
Our Government is flying in the face of pretty much every other country in Europe, and WHO recommendations. Boris recommends schools stay open, people stay in work- but Eton is deserted, and parliament is halted, take from that what you wish.

The emails I'm getting suggest the potential for hands to the pump in the coming weeks. I'm specialised, I'd be no use in gen med or A&E anymore.

I gave a talk on it from an O&G point of view the other day- generally pregnant women who are fit and well otherwise should be fine- no increase in congenital malformations or miscarriage. Just incase an GOT'ers were worried about that kind of stuff.

Then that's fine. If people are truly worried then they can choose to stay at home and choose to be bored AF like I am. However, hospitals will be under even more stress during the second wave than the first wave. It's going to be a very scary time when the lockdown in places like Italy is over.

Where was the 'without vaccination' bit pal as I obviously missed that. Point that out and I'll say I was wrong with no problem.

The initial post suggest herd immunity was some kind of novel approach to virus control, when it's been in use for decades.
In theory you could use it with the healthy in society- you would still have death in this population though. My friend died of swine flu in his 20's- and at least we had a treatment for that. Covid-19's mortality is way beyond influenza, with no vaccines, and no treatment like Tamiflu.

Berlin locking down. Bars, clubs, restaurants, cinemas etc to close.

The problem is as soon as they reopen the number of infected will rise again as will happen in China once lockdown is lifted.

This country (as most of western Europe/US) simply wont cope with social isolation/full on lockdowns for long periods and the decline in social/mental health is going to be just as big a worry as the physical health of people you imagine.

I think the Government have dropped the ball and allowed social media to terrify people into hysteria - a little fear is good as it makes people alert but the current situation of lock downs and panic alongside 24/7 hysteria news on death and destruction will be a disaster if this thing doesnt disappear.

The Government instead needs to channel the fear into a sense of community like after a terrorist attack - get communities to come together and do their bit to help the vulnerable, aiding GP's and the NHS by being sensible, hygienic and self isolating if any symptoms develop. Stay calm and carry on rather than panic buying - make us proud, excited, fired up at the thought of being a nation pulling together - get rid of the blue ticker twitter mob spreading hysteria and get the home front spirit going and keep chins up.

If there's one thing that I've learned over the past 4 years, it's that we don't want politicians anywhere near a emergency like this.

I agree but they are. For all of us. This an an exceptional time. It needs to be addressed as one. It's not a party political issue, quite frankly it's irrelevant.

This is about a functioning democracy and how we deal with extreme, unique threats. Fortunately we have one. Parliament and the country needs to be informed. Not an address or a speech. A full session were the issue can be debated and a clear course can be outlined and monitored.

If and it's a big If, the government decided unilaterally that "Herd Immunity" was the best course of action. That needs to be justified. This is bigger than the Iraq, it's most probably the biggest decision a prime minister has made since the war. Millions of UK citizens are effected and wondering what to do.

It's time for all political parties to come together and form a consensus on how we continue. There's no time for the blame game, let's get this situation whipped sharpish so we can thankfully go back to normality.

Yes, most doctors I’ve read seem to think there will be a 2nd wave with social distancing/lock downs
Death rate for every 100,000 people in Philadelphia and St. Louis between Sep 14, 1918 and Dec 28, 1918.

But a) you’d rather be St Louis than Philly b) you have had the time to increase medical capacity/equipment/treatments and put in place procedures like drive through testing and fever clinics that separate those with the virus from both the general population and those in hospital from other illnesses.

Places like China and South Korea will give valuable data too on what happens when restrictions are relaxed that we can learn from to minimize the 2nd wave.

China and italy locked down too late- they tried to tell us to do it early, but we didn't listen. Poland ect are going full lockdown early- so we can contrast.

If you have cold/flu symptoms- you should stay at home for 7/7 or 14/7 if still symptomatic. I'm sure you can entertain yourself for that period of time.

Why will hospitals be under more pressure in a second wave? A sudden single peak will absolutely cripple the NHS- I'm not even gonna make light of this. People who shouldn't die, will die because of lack of ventilators, staff, and other equipment.
Edit: See @LinekersLegs above post for epidemiological explanation.
