You’ve made me look nothing buddy, you can’t answer a simple question like we’re guaranteed a huge spike in 2-3 weeks. It’s Not hard mate
what has this got to do with u disbelieving scientists and 40000 of ur compatriots dead from a disease ur govt heroes handled terribly buddy??

My original question was do we have 40,000 extra deaths over the same period as the normal rate of deaths in 2019? And if Covid-19 is still active then we will see a huge rise in about 3 weeks because we’ve been told that if we don’t stay in and not see our family friends people will die.

I watched it live the other day. All he has to say is mistakes were made, but they were made based on the data at the time. The reason he didn't wasn't just down to the info coming from scientists, which, to start with was wrong, but when the data changed, the government dawdled. Overall, we probably lost a couple of weeks.

There's nothing wrong with admitting you got things wrong, it's human to do so, and other countries are happy to admit their mistakes ...

If they can't publicly admit their mistakes, then there's a risk that privately they actually believe their own spin, which means they wouldn't be learning lessons. If you don't learn your lessons in your job, or life, then the best you'll achieve is mediocrity. To be fair, mediocrity is a fairly accurate description for an awful lot of politicians in Westminster, and, for some of them, is probably the best they can aspire to.
Mate, in the ideal world I would agree with you 100%. I think it's fair to say that I have always held a stance of trying to find the positives in how our establishment is tackling this pandemic, mainly because I don't see the point in constantly criticising when they are obviously trying to do their best. But despite that I have often criticised certain aspects of their handling of it, not least in respect of their communication methods. I want them to be more transparent, more open and providing more detail and, not least, more honest. There is nothing I would like better than for the government to hold their hands up and say sorry, we got it wrong. We should have closed down earlier.

The reason why I don't think this is appropriate in this particular instance can be summed up in 2 words. British media. They are like vultures. Do you really think they would just say well done for coming clean. It's the right thing to do. ? No, of course they won't. They would go for the jugular and they would keep on pressing and pressing until they found out who had messed up and then they would go after the individuals. The problem here is that, a that stage in the crisis it was not the politicians who had got it wrong, it was the scientists. It's all there in black and white in the SAGE minutes for anyone to read. Up until early May (when the SAGE minutes go upto) it is as clear as crystal that the Government were following the science. Reading through the minutes you can practically transpose each one into one of the daily press conferences.

If the government were to actually concede they got it wrong, they are effectively saying our scientists got it wrong and they don't want to say that. It would be the easiest thing in the world for our government to blame the science, and as a consequence, the scientists. But apart from some out of depth junior minister who's name I can't remember, they have never done that, and it's one of the few things this government has done that I openly applaud.

As regards the highlighted bit of your post, I don't agree that the government dawdled at all. You're possibly one of the most knowledgeable guys on here as regards this pandemic, and I like that you always post from an unbiased perspective. So I'm assuming that you have taken the trouble to read through the SAGE minutes. The minutes from the meeting on 13th March are the most telling here. It starts with the bombshell that, hitherto, they have been working on outdated information. The conclusions that they were getting from the statisticians were based on figures that were 7 days old. the outcome being that they were a lot further along the "graph" than they had thought. Three days earlier, they thought they were 4 weeks behind Italy on the graph. Now they believed they were only 2 weeks. They concluded to research the implications of this before the next meeting on the 16th March. On the 16th March they met again and concluded that the most at risk need to self isolate, that people need to start socially distancing as soon as possible, but that more research was required as regards schools closing and also on timing of the full lockdown because this needed to be timed to coincide with expected hospital capacity being reached and also the risks of a second wave.

That was on 16th March as I said. The senior guys from SAGE, presumably the CMO and CSO then had to have their meeting with ministers, which probably took place later that same day, or possibly even the following morning. On the 17th March, the government made the announcement that people should socially distance, that they should stay at home if at all possible, avoid going to pubs, bars, restaurants, and theatres etc, and only undertake necessary travel. They also advised that over 70s and those with health conditions should self isolate.

There is no government dawdling there mate, not in my mind anyway.

I have to say that since then, the government has to a large extent lost the plot. And when the next set of SAGE minutes are released I think you'll find that the government has strayed from the science all too often.
