I agree mate. Way too soon and given that the majority of the British public are a bunch of pig ignorant selfish goons, this is a recipe for disaster.

theyve only relaxed rules to deflect from the Cummings fiasco. It will backfire on them when the R rate soars above 1.

The Govt need to answer for their inept handling of this situation.

Their scientists agree with you.

The R number may be similar In some countries but the proportion infected here is higher, and therefore the chance of any individual catching the disease higher at the point of coming out of lockdown.

Currently new infections in Spain, Italy, France, Germany much much lower than here.

Worth noting the Ireland’s R number estimated to be below 0.5 currently. They have handled this so much better than us.
I see that side of it. The huge problem we have is that there seems to be no indication of exactly where these infections are clustered, so we get told that there’s x amount of new infections each day but little on where they are actually occurring. There was a suggestion (can’t remember where sorry) that outside of hospitals and care homes the virus is actually close to an R number of zero.

Cheers mate. I'm just going from the ft data the other day where it appears our incidences are already rising (and there's obviously a data lag to factor in), coupled with how generalised 'lifting restrictions' is, a lot of countries had far stricter restrictions.

I think one of the rags today/yesterday was claiming several hundred construction workers have died in the UK, which suggests it must be fairly widespread within the population

Certainly a risk, if our figures are anything to go by the most likely place to pick it up the virus is at home amongst family. I’m beginning to think there will be some respite in the summer, then a second surge in Sep/Oct. I think generally people minimise the impact protective measures have had on this, social distancing is massively powerful as are face coverings, they really minimise the risk, but will be critical in opening up.

There is a school of thought of the virus might burn itself out based on the protective measures, but as you say that depends on compliance but also the conditions opening up creates, a packed tube wouldn’t be appealing say, but likely necessary for many. There in lies the conundrum in ongoing management of this. Society’s demands Vs personal safety.
There is no way that the people of this country will observe social distancing in a few weeks time, never mind wear face covering. By and large, they just dont have that discipline. If the government made it mandatory to wear face coverings and attached a spot fine for not wearing one in public then, yeah, maybe there'd be compliance by most...because that's the way people are here: they think with their wallets. Thatcher's Children.

This is not like any normal European nation. The level of community mindedness is very low. There's been a conscious decision by government to play on age differences and who succumbs to this virus. They have almost completely washed their hands of anyone over a certain age and are focussing on relaunching the economy with the aid of the young and strong while failing to protect the old and weak. There is a Darwinian experiment taking place on this side of the Irish Sea. I envy you being on that side of it.

Which is why it's imperative we keep up the social distancing

Spot on. But I actually think they've worked the Cummings fiasco. It might be a nuisance, but they've used it to send out the dog whistle that "lockdown is over...get out there and stop soaking up government cash and do what youlre supposed to do: make our sponsors money."

I nominate @davek and @peteblue. At least you know they'll balance each other out...

*3 weeks go by*

'We jointly conclude that Keir Starmer is a numpty and is a terrible lawyer and worse Labour leader...SAGE?...what about it?....what do the minutes say?... One thing at a time...'
We dont balance each other out. I am offering critique; pete is merely protecting a butcher.

Dont try and triangulate at my expense.

One for @LinekersLegs

I'll get around to reading it myself one day. I'm enjoying the fine weather down here too much at the moment. Haven't logged on there yet but I wouldn't be surprised if each session was at least an hours reading

Something to do when it starts peeing down again

Durham police facing possible inquiry into handling of Cummings case

Durham police is facing a possible inquiry into its handling of the Dominic Cummings saga after complaints were passed to its internal investigation team. The force has received a number of complaints from members of the public angry at the way it dealt with Boris Johnson’s aide over his travels during lockdown.

It is understood the messages have been passed to the force’s professional standards department which is assessing whether to take matters further.

Following an investigation this week, Durham police said it believed the special adviser probably did break lockdown rules by embarking on a 52-mile round trip to the town of Barnard Castle with his wife and son on her birthday.

Officers might have intervened to send him home had they caught him on the trip on 12 April, or fined him if he refused, the report said.

Its investigation also concluded that Cummings did not break health protection regulations by making the 260-mile trip to Durham with his son and wife, who had coronavirus symptoms, though it made no finding in relation to the “stay at home” government guidance.

The force’s findings have been met with anger in some quarters, prompting several emailed complaints which were then passed on to its professional standards department as is protocol. The complaints were first revealed by the Telegraph on Friday.

The nature of the complaints is not known. The force’s findings published on Thursday prompted anger both from people who believe Cummings did break the law and those who believe the force should never have retrospectively investigated the matter.

A Durham constabulary spokesman said: “There is currently no investigation into the force’s handling of this inquiry.”

The professional standards department could decide to take matters further if it believes there is enough evidence to warrant a misconduct investigation. Such investigations have the authority to seize documents, interview witnesses and even arrest serving police officers.

A spokeswoman for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said no referral had been made to it from Durham police and therefore it was not conducting any investigation.

I'll read through them if you like. I'll have to anyway for work.

The decisions have to be a balance between suppressing the disease and avoiding people losing their livelihoods.

There is no ideal outcome here but I think we need to be balanced and flexible in our approach. People can't be kept inside forever. 10 weeks of this is starting to do lots of long term economic damage.

Yeah I dont get what people want tbh.

If we all had thousands in the bank and our mortgages paid off sound keep us indoors for 12 months but life has to go on at some point.

Aslong as folk wear face masks and wash their hands when going to shops / indoor leisure places as much as possible thats all you can ask for.
